Taurus Gaucho lite hammer strikes
« on: May 12, 2008, 04:39:37 AM »
I have a friend who purchased a Gaucho awhile back.  We just recently got to the range.  His revolver had a light hammer strike about 2 outta every 10 cartridges.  Anyone else had this problem?  Is there a quick fix or should this be left to the factory?  Thanks in advance.

I have one and have shot several boxes of factor loads and quite a few handloads with no problems whatsoever. With the stories I read about Taurus warranty service I would probably try to fix the problem myself.

Make sure he is holding the trigger all the way to the rear when he fires the gun.  The trigger raises the transfer bar to the firing pin.  If he is trying to stop the trigger as soon as it breaks and not complete the travel to the rear of the trigger guard, he is not getting full travel of the transfer bar.  Have no fear of sending it back to Taurus, explain it to them and they will correct the problem.  I just got a Gaucho back from their service dept. and am very satisfied.  Mine had the half cock notch cut improperly and the cylinder holes would not line up with the loading gate to easily load and unload the pistol.  I've had that problem before on Uberti guns and others.  Usually i would have to correct it myself but Taurus was happy to correct the pistol.  I have two Gauchos (and another on layaway) and I am very pleased with them.  They are good shooters and have a nice, smooth action.  44 Man

My Buddy and I looked at them, but I like the Ruger Vaquero much better.

But 44 Man maybe onto the problem.

44 Man, you seemed to hit the nail on the head. I forwarded everyone's response to him and on his second trip to the range, he had no problems at all shooting the same ammo.  Thanks.

Good!  I'm glad it was that simple.  And I have to say I agree with Redhawk.  For a 'working' gun, a Ruger is a great value. and I enjoy my Rugers.  But as I compared my Gaucho with my New Vaquero the other day, I was still surprised how much heavier the New Vaquero was than the gaucho.  The Gaucho is built to the same size and heft of the old Colt's.  And even though the 'New' Vaquero is built on a smaller chassis than the Blackhawks, I was surprised at how much more bulky and heavier it still was than a SAA size gun.   So for hunting, I vote of the Ruger, but for a nice all around, easy packing gun, any of the SAA Colt's or clones get my vote.  I believe when I get the blued 5 1/2" Gaucho out of layaway, I will have the barrel cut to 4".  What a sweet package that will make.  44 Man.
