Fun at the range
« on: November 05, 2007, 07:52:33 AM »
I finally got to the range to use the Ruger Bisley Blackhawk  that I picked up a couple weeks ago. I think that I have found a new passion. This gun is so much fun I almost felt like a 16 year old with a new car and girlfriend. The 44 specials a pure joy to shoot and I had some descent groupings at 10 and 20 yards. When I switched to the magnums my grouping went out of the window. Another gentleman was there and I asked him if I was doing anything wrong and he said that shooting magnum rounds just take practice and don't get discouraged. So I will be doing a lot more practicing and will hope to use it next year during deer season. This is the most fun that I have had shooting in years. Trap and skeet will probably be taking a back seat to this.  Pike

pike, i wish i hadn't read this post,i'm trying to stay out of the doghouse this winter, but i am just afraid
i can put off a bisley much longer. in fact i'm almost tempted to convert one of my blackhawks to a bisley.
the only trouble is it appears a conversion is not really worth the cost. enjoy it.dan

I too had my Bisley out for an afternoon of shootin'.  I really did not know how much better that grip would feel under recoil.  I will be pounding some heavy loads down range over the next few weeks, weather permitting.  This gun is fun fun fun!
I aim to please - but often miss.

To get used to the Magnums do this.
Have someone load your revolver for you and load Specials, Magnums and an Empty or two.  When you hit that empty you will know exactly what you are doing wrong.  My guess is that you are anticipating recoil and pushing down on the gun as you pull the trigger.  Remember to squeeze the trigger.  The big boom shells make people flinch and pull the trigger like a shotgun.
You can not use snap caps as you can see the shells as they rotate.  I was going to say use all brass shells but if you have a few nickel plated mags and you see it going into battery you will really notice if it's an empty.
I used to use this same method in teaching new police officers how to shoot their Model 60's in 357 mag or the air weights in the +P loadings as their back up guns when I was in college.
Works great and you keep telling your self that the next round will be an empty till you get used to the recoil and stop doing things wrong.  The recoil will not hurt you.  Let the gun rise and it will fall right back to the target.  In your case the gun will roll a little in your hand due to the Bisley design.  Use a two handed grip at first and get as much of the weak hand on the grip and your shooting hand as possible.  Line your thumbs up parallel  and wrap the Strong hand on the gun and wrap the weak hand around the grip and the strong hand.  Your thumbs should be together on the same side of the revolver.  That movie grip with the thumb across the top of your wrist does not work and if you transition to an auto for other games, your gonna need stitches!  Wish I had a picture of the proper grip.  The more mass you have on the stocks the less felt recoil.
