.357 Max rifle ballistics?
« on: November 29, 2007, 01:25:10 PM »
I see quite a few folks here are into the .357 Maximum as an easy rechamber for .357 Mag. Handi Rifles and I am interested. However, the only load data I've come across, and that ain't much, is from handguns, I'm wondering what you get from a 22" barrel?
The story of David & Goliath only demonstrates the superiority of ballistic projectiles over hand weapons, poor old Goliath never had a chance.

Can someone plug those numbers into a program and let me see what the trajectory is with the Hornaday 180 gr SSP (single shot pistol) bullet?
Velocity  2100
Ballistic Coefficient  0.248
Sectional Density 0.201

Thanks,
Pharmboy

So,
According to the chart you could sight your rifle high 2" high @ 100yds and be  on at 150 yds ? Could you also assume that 1/4" inch high@ 25 yds would also be zeroed @ 150 yds?

Pharmboy

I'm just trying to make sense out of the table.

Ballistic software just gives you an idea, shoot it to find out what will actually happen. ;)

Thanks Tim,
I hope this helped Coyotejoe as much as it helped me. Because you have the scope mounted above the bore, you really have to understand what is going on with the bullet path and not just the drop of the bullet out of the muzzle to understand the "zero" of the projectile.

Thanks again,
Pharmboy

Yes, scope height above the bore will affect the predicted results, that's why shooting it at your intended range will help the most, no surprises then. ;)
