Where to send a bear hide to be tanned
« on: August 28, 2007, 06:14:34 AM »
Does anyone have a reputable tanning company that they can recommend.  Just shot a bear in Canada and have the full body caped. Not sure what I'm going to do with it but will have it all tanned.  My wife wants a rug but I may do a 1/2 mount due to the nice white spot on the chest (which will basically be lost in a rug).  I also have a 1/2 of a bear from 2 years ago that is already tanned and ready for mounting but I wasn't real happy about the tanning, some slippage (which may have been my fault).  Live and learn.

Take it to a local taxidermist and have him send it to one of his tanneries.

I am doing the rug myself with the help of my taxidermist friend.  He has used several just looking for one that people would recommend.

I know how picky my taxidermist is, so I think he would be the best judge of what tannery to use. Also most tanneries would do a better job if they knew it came from a taxidermist. But that is just my opinion.

Good luck and I hope you have a lot of fun doing your bear.

Buckskin, I feel your best bet would be to give it to a reputable taxidermist and have him send it out. I've done it both ways and the price isn't really any different. But if you want to do it yourself do a search on tannerys and you will find many. I have a taxidermist in Eagle River that has done a lot of work for me. He used to send all his hides to a tannery in San Fransisco, world renouned for quality, the place alot of hunters coming from africa have their hides sent. He stopped using them when UPS lost a Bear hide a Wisconsin hunter brought him. (to many years waiting only to have it lost buy a mail carrier!) He now ships it closer to home via a different carrier, more on that in a moment. There is also a place in North Dakota that has gotten prase, sorry, but the names escape me. If you would want to send your hide to Alaska, Alpha Fur Dressers is the place, they did a Brown Bear And a Dall sheep for me, excellent work and priced with all the rest. Now I could be wrong but I believe my Taxidermist sends all his hides now to a Tannery in Stergoun Bay. He told me that they were a bit pricey but they do a good job and hides get there in a day or two, He figures thats lets chance for them to get lost in transit. I had a Bison hide done by a place about a 1/2 hour from my place in Sheboygan Falls 2 years ago. What a S#*^ hole. Don't let looks fool you they did an outstanding job. Unfortunatley, it burned down last summer. For what it was worth, hope this helps some and when I get some time I'll make a phone call and do a little searching and post it here. Good Huntin' CRASH87
