Peep sight / scope mount question
« on: December 01, 2007, 07:37:22 AM »
Is there a see through scope mount that would allow me to use a peep sight?  Didn't T/C used to make a barrel mount peep sight for the Encore 50 cal?  I could find none on their web site.
Williams makes a peep for the Encore.  Is there a see through mount that is low enough to still see through the peep?

Why do you need see-thru mounts?  Could quick-release mounts serve your purpose?  I used to use the Leupold quick-release bases and they worked very well.  I used the scope for open fields, but popped the scope off if I headed into the woods and used the open sights.

Now if the rear peep were back where the rear scope mount holes are, this would create a problem.  Even with see-thru mounts you may need to tap extra holes further forward for the peep (I own an Omega X7 with a peep sight and I could not mount a scope at the same time if I wanted to, they use the same holes).

Ironsighter makes ringmounts that may work with a ghost ring barrel mounted sight, but as AndyHass said, any peep sight will use the same holes as the ringmount or a base.

XS makes a combo Ghost ring/Weaver base for the Rem 700, perhaps something like that could be fabricated for use with see thru rings.

I wanted see through mounts because I was out in an all day rain Monday, and I couldn't keep the scope clear.  I used the flip up scope covers and it still fogged up.  No matter how much I wiped it off it, it was just a losing battle.
What about mounting the peep where the original front sight was.  That is forward of my current scope mounts.  Would the peep be effective there?  Would I be able to see it through the scope mounts?

Smokepole cowboy,

This may be just the ticket for you.

See thru mounts might work with it.

Smokepole cowboy,

If you get one, let me know what you think of it. I'm thinking about getting one for next season. I wouldn't intend on using it with see-thru mounts. I'd mount the scope for the firearms season, then take off the scope for the muzzleloader season(scopes not allowed in MN for the muzzleloader season). But I'm really itchin to try a peep sight. My "old" eyes have a real problem with open sights, but the peep will work much better.

By the way, EABCO is about 40 miles down the road from me. I've been meaning to stop in someday when I'm in their area.

Rifleman,
Will do.
I am starting to get that old eyes syndrome now too.
