Play in hinge?
« on: December 04, 2007, 02:36:49 PM »
How much play in the encore hinge can be accepted? With the gun broke down you can move the barrel side to side and the play is very noticeable. Up in the locked position play is not near as bad but still can be felt. With the forearm off the play is very noticeable broke down and up in locked position. The gun probably doesnt have over 80 shots with the factory pro hunter 22-250 barrel. I sort of feel like its not to big of a deal because if the barrel is moving so is the scope, but Im sure there is more to it than that. Any help appreciated. Thanks!

The scope or sights are affixed to the barrel so move in line with it. Therefore it's not nearly as big a deal as some wish to make of it. The real bottom line is how well does it shoot? If it's shooting well it's clearly NOT a problem.

I have a custom eabco barrel in 30-06AI...it has alittle play with the barrel locked up...Called eabco about it and they said it was normal and nothing to worry about.
Thay are right as it shoots just wonderfully...................I have noticed in mine though...with a shell chambered and barrel locked up...there is no play.

Well; I have my own opinion about "hinge play". Yes the sights do "move" with barrel. What that means is that barrel vibrations upon firing may not allow the barrel to be lined up with the original line of sight and then when the bullet leaves the barrel it follows a different path. If it's not a big deal then try shooting a bolt gun with screws loose between stock and action.
I have a 308 and 20ga. rifled barrel. If I use the original pin my groups are not that good. With an oversize pin my 08 shoots 1" and the 20 around 3" at 100 yds. That's my experience and my opinion. My gunsmith feels the same way. If your barrel wobbles when you move it around with your hand; just how much do you think it does when the round goes off?
