Good Hunting Holsters

Anybody have a recommendation for a good holster for a 629 6 inch barrel?  It would be great if the holster had the capability to be worn crossdraw or strong side.  And...even better if it could be used with a scope when I want to use one.

I use a Hunter ballistic nylon in a bandoleer style for both my DW 357max and my contender.  They are light and waterproof and actually cheaper than a good leather holster.  Check out either a Bass Pro or Cabelas for a selection.

I also use a bandolier type holster, but it's a homemade one I fasioned from a nylon Uncle Mikes.

Bandoleer is the ans IMO, and fewer the straps the better.

It seems the new Uncle Mikes products are a joke. I was looking at some in green packaging and could not believe how cheep thay were.
Python or Blackhawk are pretty good.

You might try quite hide holsters. Dave does a great job of custom making them to a custom fit and the price is very reasonable.

I recommend a bandoleer from www.pistolpackaging.com. They don't have any straps or buckles to restle with.
I have a homade one of leather similar to theirs I have used for the last 10 years. Great holster.

Well, here is a recommendation that will go across the "platform" so-to-speak.

I have a Smith 629 with a 6.5" barrel that is scoped. I use a Bianchi 4101 holster for hunting. http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=815131&t=11082005  Yeah, I know this one says 7" to 8" barrel, but the 6.5" fits just fine in it. I also bot the "flap" that goes over it for hunting in those rainy\snowy days. It keeps the scope glass very clear up to the point when you need it. Easy to adjust and easy to carry your handgun...scoped or not. I like it alot. Rain or snow doesn't bother it as it dries out quickly.

Now, I just bot about a month ago, my first leather holster for my 3" barrel Smith 357. I got it from Simply Rugged Holsters http://www.simplyrugged.com/leather_goods/index.html The guy makes 'em in Alaska and it's probably as close to that state as I'll ever get. My Gun fits into it like a glove. I've taken it with me every day since I got it and the gun has stayed in that holster just like it's suppose to. There is no retention strap or anything like that. I had a "cheepie" nylon holster before this one and I almost lost the gun in the woods once. (Gun and holster just "fell" off of belt).  These leather holsters are excellent for the shorter barrel gun that you wish to carry on your hip. I will never again use a nylon holster for a hip carry gun. MHO

I highly recommend the Mernickle SH7 or SH7B.

I have one for my 629, 6 1/2" with scope and one for my 460 XVR 7 1/2" with compensator and scope.
They are absolutely great holsters and make carrying even the big heavy 460 a dream. Both the scoped holsters were custom built just for my gun/scope setup.

I just ordered another one for my 629 Trail Boss with 3" barrel. This one is not scoped.

Make that 2 votes for the bandolier from Pistol Packaging , I use one with my unscoped 7.5" SBH and it works quite nicely for me . Not fancy , but nice quality , leather and worksmanship .

Another vote for Pistol Packaging's bandoleer holster from me.  I have my 7.5" SRH with scope in mine, and have the 10 round cartridge holder on the front strap.  That's all I need.  Once I'm in the woods, throw in 6 rounds, keeping 4 for reserve.  At the end of the day, unload and put the 6 back in the slots till next time.  It has a small strap that hooks over the hammer to secure the gun when in rough hiking.  Nothing fancy.  Just well made, durable leather, with good fit to the gun.

Yeah.....just make sure you get the flap "option" for it. If you just get the "strap" you will be disappointed in the rain or when you walk thru a dry field as your scope will look like a basket full of weeds.
