?'s on new hornet
« on: December 06, 2007, 01:42:12 PM »
Hey guys, I dont think that my new hornet barrel is sitting like its supposed to on my BC receiver. It does however lock up tight. You cant see any light between the end of the barrel and the breach face. when i shot it today it shot great and i didnt have any problems. I used 11.2gr of H110 and a 40 gr Vmax. It is a strait shooter for plinkin, i didnt have nough time to shoot any paper though. Anyways, i just looked at the primers to see if there was any pressure signs, (non that i could tell, but dont know exactly how to tell.) They werent bulging out of the primer pockets and were not "smashed" flat, those are the signs i usualy look for when looking at pressure. The thing that makes me think that its not locking up right is that the firing pin hit a little high on every primer. all of my other calibers punch the primer right in the center. ????? I hope this isnt to big of an issue. But i dont know what or where to take material out from to get it to line up right. Please advise me on what to do. Thnx!
Hank.

If all of your barrels have centered pin hits, you're lucky, they're normally off center a little, some a lot!! Not to worry, off center hits happen on a lot of firearms, not just H&Rs. As long as it goes bang consistently, don't be concerned. ;)

Whew!  ;D Thanks fellas! I appriciate it. Got me a little scared there for a while. Ya I was really happy with the results i got with the little barrel and cartrige. I was surprised at the how acurate is was for it being the first time it was shot (even tho it was shot before i got it and since i had no idea what to expect ;D). I just wish that the pdogs wernt hibernating now!

Hank,
If you look on the Hodgdon site on their 22 Hornet load data H110 has
almost double the c.u.p. as Lil' Gun. I'm not sure this has all that much
meaning as people have been loading the Hornet for years with
H110 and it has worked just fine. I just thought it was interesting
that the pressure was much higher with H110. I have only used Lil' Gun
in my Hornet so far and I have been very happy with the results. I might
try a few rounds of H110 just for the heck of it.

I'm happy that the barrel that I sold you is doing well.  Dead-center primer hits are not common in my experience, even in bolt action guns.  As quickdtoo said "As long as it goes bang consistently, don't be concerned."

I use 13.0 gr of Lil' Gun with the 40 gr. V max with good results in both of my Hornets, a Topper and a Contender carbine.

Good shooting!

SM Bob, That is some interesting data that you found. Once this powder is gone i plan to try some lil gun but was just running short on cash and this seemed like it would work better for the 40 gr vmaxes.

Chuckhnter, I am happy that you gave me the opportunity to buy it from you! The primer hits are somthing new to me. guess i either never paid attention to em, whitch im sure that i couldnt have missed em since i am always looking for signs of pressure. Anyways I plan to get you guys some range results either when i can make it out of town with enough time to punch some paper or when the weather aint so nasty.
