Ruger bolt face question
« on: December 02, 2007, 02:17:42 AM »
I have a Ruger MKII 30/06 that I have had for quiet some time.  I have never really hunted with the gun as it has always been a PITA to load from the magazine.  I started reloading for the gun and have been single loading while working up loads, today I got everything worked out and tried to run a few through the mag and it kept jamming.  I have a 7mm in the same gun so I started comparing bolts.  The 30/06 has a tag on the bottom of the bolt and it does not guide the shell into the chamber because of this tag, the shell either falls in or jams.  I took a pic, the 30/06 bolt is on top the 7mm Mag on the bottom.  Is this the way the standard calibers are?  This thing jams pretty much every load coming out of the mag.  If this is wrong, how do I fix it, send it to Ruger or have my gunsmith do it?

Thanks!

How about a pic of the ends of the bolts?

I just looked at an M77 and an M77 MKII and neither looked like your .30-06 as far as I can tell from the picture.

The bottom is definitely a newer MKII.

I compared it to my ruger M77 All Weather 30-06 and it looks like the 7mag. Is this the first time you have worked the action with ammo in the mag? If it is then I think you need to contact ruger as it looks like they missed something. Mine looks like the 7mag and I have never had this issue.

Honestly, I have owned the gun for years, bought it new and never really messed with it because of the shine.  I shot it a bit all single loadings on the bench, painted the gun to hunt with and just now found the real feeding problem.  Guess I need to call Ruger.

Yeah sounds like it. I hunt with mine but not much because of the shine. I am going to get it sandblasted to a mattle finish.

That .30-06 bolt face doesn't look right to me.  Its a MKII but doesn't match any of my MKII bolt faces.  Looks like they forgot to mill part of the bolt face.

I'd contact Ruger Customer Service and send them the pics.  They will make it right.

I own a few Ruger's all so, none have the extra metal on the bolt face. But I do have one question have you taken the stock off and if so did you get the magazine back in correctly? I had some problems with that myself.

Cecil, yes the stock has been off, my gunsmith did a trigger job, floated it out, etc.  I took the gun to him today after and explanation last night.  When he pulled the bolt and looked at it, he just laughed and commented on it must be a Monday gun, shut down on Friday and just skipped finishing it when they got back on Monday.  He thinks there is quite a bit on there all the way around that isn't supposed to be there.  He is going to fix it up, check the head space, the whole nine yards.

Thanks for the help, I was just going to double check that there wasn't a difference between my standard /06 action and the mag actions.

If he's going to do it then it should be free because ruger will fix it free.

Yup.  And they'll pay the return freight as well.

And they are generally pretty fast.  Both my buddy and I sent in used Blackhwk revolvers (different problems, both aused by the previous owners).  Turnaround time was a week or so.

I have a M77 R in .308 and my bolt looks alot like your 30-06 bolt except I have a rounded ball plunger that acts as am extractor spring.  It looks like your missing it.  Are you? Mine is an older M77 with the tang safety.
I have sent three guns back to Ruger for different reasons.
The first was My M77 as the stock cracked fore and aft of the magazine.  Had it back in less than two weeks with a new stock and replaced a screw I buggered when I was in my teens using the wrong screwdriver.
The second was a Bisley in .22LR and I wanted to see if they would fit a .22Mag cylinder to it.  The answer is no, but they went through the gun and replaced a grip panel that had a microscopic crack.
Third is a Red Label in 20ga that I lent to a friend and he gave it back with the barrels loose.  I just went out last week.
Just send it back.  I found it best to fax them first and they will tell you where to send the firearm and to notify them it went to them.  Don't forget to include a letter with the rifle telling them what the problem is and how to get it back to you.

mcwoodduck sounds like don't lend your guns to your friends. I did that once with a red label and it was my brother and he some how either shot steel shot through it or got a 3 1/2 shell in it. I wouldn't shoot worth a darn and ruger replaced it free.

Several people have told me that Ruger will set everything back to factory specs, so that would mean another trigger job, etc.  I have heard mixed stories about the speed of their returns also, some say they are slow as Christmas and others say they are fast.  I just went with my gunsmith because I know it will be fast, he will be very reasonable, and I know it will be done right.  If this were summer I would probably send it to Ruger, this is my main hog gun and it is getting into hog season and I need it now.  I doubt I'll kil anything but this is the one I pack.

Thanks again

If you gunsmith is a ruger dealer then still contact ruger then he should do it free. Also if he's not it may void your warranty.

The gunsmith put it back to spec and it was free of charge.  I shot it yesterday and it fed perfectly.

So he ground that off and polished it for free?

It really wasn't that hard of a job. I know I probably wouldn't have sent it in and done it myself. But if I didn't know how to then I would have sent it back in.

I figured it would be a fairly easy job, I just didn't have the tools.  He had the tools and ability so since I knew it would be fast and correct it just made sense to have him do it.

06,
Good advise, but he is also a customer and does over a million a year with me.  So ....
I did get him his own gun this year.  OK I got my company to spring for some of the price as well as a day at the Olympic shooting center here in Corona.  So he could get used to shooting it.
