Will a Remington VSF make 10lb 2oz weight limit?
« on: December 02, 2007, 03:16:25 AM »
I'm thinking of buying a Remington Varmint Synthetic Fluted rifle in 308 with intentions of using it in standard class silhouette with a Leupold scope. Depending on where you look, this rifles weight is listed at 8 1/2 or  9.1 pounds. 8.5 will make weight, 9.1 will not with the scope. Can anyone help with some info?

If you can find a used 24x leupold they weigh about 14.5 ounces and use light weight rings you should be ok, also you can get a aluminum bolt shroud to save a few ounces and take out the magazine spring and follower and replace with a aluminum one, you should be all right. I would look at another caliber other than the .308 as it is a hard kicker The .260 rem is a good choice.

Drags. I am a fan of the 260 (I have a ADL in 260) but no factory rifles in that caliber are available. The VLS was for a couple of  years but that was till 1997. That rifle weighs more that the VSF and I"d have to take inches off the barrel I'm thinking the rifle woudnt kick too bad with .308 155 grain bullets. My SPS tactical shoots them well and they are becoming the darling of long range shooting in 308. I would go with a aftermarket fiberglass stock and talley one piece mount/rings to save weight. My Leupold 8.8-25X40 is about 4 oz more than the 24x and I'd like to keep it if possible, or else the 24x it is. Thanks for your help

Rich, I have a .260 in the VLS and I made weight using a 24x weaver scope and burris rings plus removing wood from the stock and the other things I mentioned in my first post. I forgot that leupold also makes lightweight 25x and 30x scopes for silhouette, if you like your .308 there would be nothing wrong with using it. PS I didn't have to shorten the barrel or would I recommend doing that.

This just a thought as i know nothing about your sport but if the BBL has the same outside diameter with all calibers the larger the caliber the lighter the gun will be due to the larger hole in the BBL thus less weight and if you reload recoil is not an issue. so if you were to go with a 260/7mm-08 ect it would weigh more than the 308 . here is nice lightweight one piece mount for your rifle that should help save some OZ.   http://www.dednutz.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=2&zenid=8ea24ab7edf3adbd35bfa4060aef8ba3

You can reload to reduce recoil but if you go to far you won't knock the rams over. Thats why I like the 260 rem it can be loaded with enough velocity to knock the rams over and still have low recoil.

I'm trying to find the VLS in 260. I'm going to the 2 biggest gun shows around to try my luck. The few of these rifles that have been around has disappeared. I can't afford to custom route. 308s are available in every varietion and shouldnt recoil too much more than the 260 while using the 155s in 308.

Rich, I haven't reloaded the 308 for silhouette but I have loaded for the 7-08, which recoils less than the 308. In comparing the 7-08 to the 260 the cpt loads for the 7-08 recoiled like the ram loads in the 260, the ram loads for the 7-08 would be like the 308 155gr loads, which would be your cpt load. I would think yould need a 180 gr or higher ram load for the 308.

I think I got all that you said. Situations are this, The 7mm-08 in a varmint rifle is not easy to find either. The longest distance silhouette match in NJ where I live is only 300M Not the 500 official distance so I think any target load from 6mm 105 grains up will work. I'm already set up to reload 308 and 260. 308 allows me to shoot match rifle class in f class shoots. I think I'll work with the 308 155gn untill I find the 260 I'm looking for. I handled a few rifles yesterday at a gunshow. I think the 26inch barrel is too long for me, A 24 feels better, the 26 inch fluted is OK. Wish me luck, I'll keep you posted. Thank You for your insights
