WHICH 7.62 X 39 AMMO FOR BOAR HUNTING
« on: August 05, 2007, 03:51:05 PM »
I am going to Langley ranch for a boar hunt, I am looking for small pigs (under 100 pounds).
Can some one recommend some choices for ammunition in 7.62 x 39 that will work well. The
best I can seem to find is American Eagle 122 gr jsp or Wolf 128 gr jhp. I intend on only taking
a head shot, I do not want a trophy just meat.

If you can only find them 2.... your choice is 50/50.... Buy a box of each and see which your gun prefers... Both will do the job with good shot placement. ~Ace~

Probably depends on what you are shooting it in.  If it is one of Russian auto guns use something that won't slam fire on you or no one will hunt with you again.  If it is civilian rifle then find something that will shoot by trying everything you can find, it is cheap.  Larry

Also, don't forget that US made ammo is a .308 bullet diameter and the Russian ammo is a .311 bullet diameter.  Do not put an oversize bullet in your rifle as it could be hazardous to your health.

I would look for some of the 154 gr jsp bullets available.  I had luck with that bullet with the boar I shot.

I've had good results with the Wolf 123gr HPs on both deer and hogs.
I hand load Hornady 130gr with excellent results. My Mini 30 has a .308 bore, and I have had no issue with the .311 dia bullets. The 7.62x39 is fairly low pressure round and the mini is gas operated so I am really not to concerned with the larger dia bullets causing pressure problems. That being said it does shoot the .308 dia hand loads much better than any factory stuff I have tried.

Much was what I have read points to the Winchester 123gr soft point as the best performing hunting load.  One of the writers shot a 600lb boar at 50 yds or so, the bullet completely penetrated the chest on a broadside shot and was stopped on the off-side under the hide, the boar just kind of tipped over and never even twitched.  He said that he was so impressed with the results on this boar, and others he'd shot, that he would use the load on baited black bears with no hesitation.
