.357mag and 45-70 at the range.

Took my new barrels to the range today.
Put a 2power scope on the .357 and at 75 yards was hitting dead center and and an inch high after six rounds.
Switched to the 45-70 which will be left with irons. Three shot groups formed a nice tight triangle, but just a little left of center.
The real problem seem to be the montecarlo stock. You have to struggle to get low enough to use the iron sights with it. Just doesn't feel right. Like you need another inch lower to line the sights up.
Would a switch to a regular straight stock solve the problem?
If not I guess I will have to scope it.

Other than that both barrels shot great and the 45-70  300gr HP leaves big holes.

The iron sighted Handi's are supposed to have a straight comb stock on them. The monte's are for scoped rifles.

Good shooting. I have a 2.5X scope on my 357. It is a Tasco Bantom. I bought it at Walmart and it is a shotgun scope. Parallax is set at 50 yards. I like it, it has a fairly long eye relief, 5 inches I think.

They make a straight stock for irons. What frame did you put them on? The 45-70 comes with a straight stock as do several others. Any of the guns that come with iron sights have a straight stock. 22 hornet, 44 Mag, 45-70 just to name a few. You can purchase them through H&R and a couple of other places. The wood ones are in the $35 range I believe. If you have to switch back and forth, it would be easier to put a scope or red dot on the 45-70

You can use a scope with the straight comb stock . That may be the way to go if you have to 'share" a reciever between a scoped barrel & Iron sight barrel.    Jay

What everyone has told you is correct about the stocks, you might try placing a WTT (want to trade) in the classifieds if you want to trade the Monte Carlo stock for a non-Monte Carlo stock...or perhaps the .357 has a straight stock, if so you could just swap the stocks. It is easy to do, you just need a phillips screwdriver and a rachet with a long extension, or 2 shorter extensions, and either a 9/16" or 14mm socket. Good luck, it seems you are off to a great start with those guns....<><....

Sounds like the same scope I have.
The rifle started out as a .243 superlight. Both barrels share the same receiver.
I'll just get a regular stock for it.

Update:

Went to the range again yesterday for a pumpkin shoot.
158 gr hp .357 mag will put 3" holes in a pumpkin.
45-70 will knock the side off of one.
I really am pleased on how accurate the .357 is.
Decided that I want to scope the 45-70.

Think 3.5 eye relief is enough or do I need something greater 4?

3½" is plenty for trapdoor and low levergun loads, but anything hotter and you may want closer to 4", just depends on your shooting habits and anatomy.

I won't be reloading anytime soon.
Right now just using 300 gr factory ammo.

They're trapdoor loads, so the 3½" will work fine.

Update:

45-70 did pretty good with the new Nikon 3-7.

First up is the Georgia Arms 300gr. You can see the rail getting to the bullseye.
Put four shots almost dead center.


Second is Remington 405gr. Had one flyer, but the rest grouped pretty good. The center is again four shots.




Oh and my .243 shot pretty goo too with the Remington 100gr.
