Finally a yote
« on: November 16, 2009, 04:02:14 AM »
I've been hunting on my wife's grandparent's place for 12 years now and almost every year have spent some time out calling for coyotes and in that time I've only seen one and didn't even have a rifle with me at the time.  This past Saturday, after checking a couple of spots for deer, I walked up on a big coyote approaching the gut pile from my father-in-law's deer from that morning.  I at first thought it was the neighbor's dog because he was so fat.  But after a minute I ruled out all the local dogs.  I guess he smelled me because he got a bit nervous and came toward me a bit, then turned and I saw his color, tail, and head shape and realized it was a yote.  He walked a few feet back the way he came then turned broadside.  One shot from my 30-06 at 125yds was all it took.  To be honest, I'm surprised I hit him because I rarely hunt with that rifle.  But, I finally got a coyote.  Now I can die happy.

Congrats on getting your first Coyote. Believe now that you have shot the first one, the rest will be somewhat easier.

Congrats on your first one.  A buddy of mine came by just now, he nailed one with his 300 Win Mag this last weekend... no pictures of that one  ::)

Dr. Doug, actually my brother-in-law took it and is going to have a rug made out of it.  His wife was less than thrilled.  But, it was a pretty yote, not like the scrawny, mangy ones we normally see around here.

What kind of damage did the 06 do to the hide?

I was shooting 150gr Sierra SBT GameKing's at around 2900fps.  The bullet really didn't have a chance to expand so 30 cal hole in, 30 cal hole out.  I hit him just back from the ribcage (not the ideal spot but it did the job) and so hit no bone.  It might have been much worse than that if I had hit a rib or shoulder.  I quit hunting hogs with the 30-06 because it tends to cut the little ones in half.
