Hypothetical ???
« on: October 28, 2007, 10:15:56 AM »
OK; Here's the scenario:  I have a supersportsman's license and have all ready  used both muzzle loader/ archery tags and my WMU permit and the regular firearm season is over.  I'm hunting the late muzzle loader season and the only tag I have left is my regular firearm tag and I want to hunt the late muzzle loader season in a any $ex muzzleloader area.  1. Can I do it? and, 2. can I shoot either buck or doe?

If you have already used your muzzleloader tags, then you cannot legally kill another doe. You cannot tag an animal with a tag from another season. I have to read the regs, but you might be able to have someone else sign their tag over to you to use, but please check this out first. I know that you are only asking a hypothetical, but we all need to follow the game laws and ethics to preserve our hunting future. All it takes is one such story to hit the papers, and we all look bad.  I'm not preaching, but I think that you all will agree.

PS- I hope that your season goes well enough to need more tags!

K.K.  That's what I thought too, but as I read this year's guide on top of page 23 under "Regular season deer tag" it seems to me I can use this unfilled  regular tag for a late season muzzleloader killed buck or doe as long as the area allows either $ex and I have purchased  a muzzleloader privledge.  Every time I read this guide I seem to find something new to me.

Unless something has changed, a regular tag could be used on a buck or a doe during the muzzleloader season. Years ago, you did not get a mz tag, just the privilege to use any unused tags and to be able to shoot a doe and use your regular buck tag.

You are right, I should check the regs myself before I shoot my mouth off.

Exactly what I was thinking when I started reading this thread. Why not get the answer from someone who is supposed to know the regs inside and out?

according to page 23 from the book you can use a regular season tag during late muzzleloading season as long as you have purchased a muzzleloading privelege when you got your license. Obviously with a super sportsman license you have that. And you can take any legal deer during that season. BY that I mean either a buck or doe. In the northern zone where I hunt I can also use it next september for the early archery sason from 9 27-30.  I have had this question brought up many times in my hunter education classes and answered by an ECO just that way.

Shaylex, here in Alaska I've had to wait on the phone while the F&G cops looked up the answer every single time I called in. Once, the F&G cop did not even know what an Aimpoint was or why someone would want to use an illuminated reticule!

I believe the regs read. All tags left over even DMU permits can be used during the late muzzleloader season. All can be used either sex except the DMU (does Only).
