Wish me luck..!st time out with my sparkchucker
« on: December 12, 2007, 04:34:50 PM »
Finally got my Green Mountain barrelled T/C Hawken shooting right and the day after Christmas starts our  flintlock season here in Pa. Having had such good luck with my side hammer and inlines I finally put in enough effort with the Hawken to feel comfortable pointing it at a deer. The load is a .495 ball .018 pillow ticking Shenandoah lube ( wierd stuff, smells like Murphy's Oil Soap when it dries) over 70gr of Swiss 3f. I thought about it for awhile and realized that of the 29 deer I've shot 15 have gone down to muzzleloaders. I got bit good and my breechloaders are feeling neglected. Oh well, everything old is new again...

Double 30,

Good luck this season with your new flinter. I sure do hope that .490 rb finds its mark. Where are you hunting?

I have not had enough range time with mine to feel 100% confident, so I'm taking the side lock out during the Michigan season.

Good Luck.

East and s.east Pa. Mostly Lehigh,Bucks and Luzerene counties.used to be we could only shoot round balls here in the flintlock season. However all bulets are legal now.I've had tremendous success with saboted loads as well as minies from my inline and sidelock. But this year I got the flinter and decided to give the humble ball a whirl.

There is nothing wrong with the round ball. However, round and Grey really isn't all that exciting to look at is it? Although, I have hunted 13 years with the RB and I have yet to lose a deer that I have hit with it. I think the furthest I had to track a deer was under 100 yds. Within its range, the RB is devastating. You should have no problem with it. Good luck! Let us know how you did.
