Have been looking for one of those old fashioned leather covered Canteens that would look slick hanging from the saddle horn.

The prices are ridiculous!

So I got bored and threw together a leather canteen cover
Latigo leather with latigo lace used the plastic innards of a blanket covered
2 Qt canteen thought this looked a bit better though the white plastic top doesn't look too good.

So take off the plastic cover and replace it with a big cork!

Thought bout that but you would be sticking a cork in a threaded white plastic neck, Big Hext Finnegan suggested covering the white plastic lid with a hollow wood cover I think I will give it a try.

First answer to the questions yest it could be made in black latigo
Latigo is an oil tanned leather so you really get the color it comes in it really can't be died too well. It is also more rot resistant than the vegetable tanned stuff the black would cost a bit more for the material.

Second, well I could put together a kit if you really want one Howdy,
it is pretty easy to do, measure your canteen diameter, and the thickness of the "Band" the one you see here is a 2 quart "American Camper"
Blanket covered canteen usually has a metal band crimped around it along with a really chincy looking nylon strap like this.

I made the strap 1" out of latigo the "Band" was made 3" and just long enough to just meet at the bottom and the front and back were made 7.5" and which color either the Burgandy Latigo or the Black Latigo I could also supply Rawhide lace if desired, what I used was latigo red. Let me know if you are still interested
I will tally up the cost and my time and let you know the cost, for the kit
If you have another type of canteen send me a pic and I will try to figure out what to do with it.

Woops sorry William Layton, I thought you were referring to the over all product! You were just referring to the top! My bad, I thought of that but the paint would likely come off.... I wish it was just molded in black plastic.....

Roy

If you've got a lathe or know someone who does it shouldn't be too hard to make a wooden cover for the cap.  If you don't have a lathe it might not be too much fun!

If you need a piece turned let me know the inside diameter and I might be able to toss something out for you with relative ease.  The inside diameter is the outside diameter of the cap, and I'd need a depth measurement as well.

Thanks FFG! But I don't have time to quit work and go into business of goin broke! But I may make a few kits and see how they do.
I am cooking one up for Howdy right now.

William Layton, Story of my life man, the Military found out I was a good shot, so's they put me to work doing that for money.... darn it all glad I didn't get tired of the guns..... :)

I had not done any leather work in years then they went and opened up a new Tandy store round the corner from my house!
I think since they been open I musta spent enough to cover my gun buget for the year!
Darn good thing I reload.

I just made this holster for my brother in law for Christmas What do you all think?
I hadn't ever made a holster before.
First gun belt I made didn't fare to well.......

Howdy,

Fine looking leather!  Well done.

leather covered Canteen.
« Reply #15 on: December 08, 2003, 04:58:11 PM »
Thats a mighty fine looking covering job. You can also make a canteen from a glass wine bottle. I think greek wine comes in them. they are flat with curved edges and round in shape, and have two handles on the neck.First you dispose of the wine. Thenyou cover it with suade leather. Put a sling on it ,insert a cork and thats it. The bucskinners made them. I haven't made one myself but I made a shot pouch with a wooden plug . Its the same principle without the glass bottle. the only difference I turned the pouch inside out to hide the stitching,....Horsefeathers.

William,
For your ranger belt do you want a belt for Duty use? Or do you want it for personal use? I mena do you wnat a combination Pants belt/ gun belt or do you want a sam brown with a ranger type billet? Do you want it tooled or plain?

either way I would probably choose a back cut from a Saddle skirting side
This would be a thicker 10-12 Oz leather
with the billets made from a butt piece then skive the ends where the billets sew on to half thickness I like the vegetable tanned tooling leather
the Latigo material will likely bleed color on anything you put against it since it is an oil tanned material. Latigo cannot be tooled it is softer than the Oak tanned material I tend to like a stiffer belt than most folks I also like a stiffer or harder/ heavier holster.

i must be doin sumthin wrong on tha computer so i will post it here.
all you have said is correct and is in agreement with what i been reading.
i'll be using it to play these ipsc games and since i'll have it i will use it for the heavier guns when i feel the need.
the back is what is used to make bridle leathe out of and is the strongest part of the leather.

I have made several holsters and belts and used a 10 oz. Leather.  I am a big fellow and like the thickness around my waiste.  Tandy's sells belt blanks and those are nice, but you can cut your own.  My first holster/belt was a buscadero rig.  The belt is 3" wide and has the drop down loop, I cut that from a full side of leather I bought.  I found a place on the web that sold latigo sides in 10oz. for ~$150 delivered.  That was two years ago, though.  I did get that belt, a holster, two more belts, a guitar strap, 2 more holsters, a quivver for crossbow bolts, and a pair of cowboy cuffs, and I still have some left.  Tandy's is great, especially now that they have the store nearby, but they can be $$ on leather.  I have also bought some leather from Moscow Fur and Hide, on the web.  I bought a smoke tan beef hide that will soon be a flannel lined fringed cover for my Henry.  Anyway, more information than was needed, but I like the 10 oz for blets and holsters, and once you decide, there are lots of good internet places to shop, including Tandy
