30-30 leverevolution
« on: November 27, 2007, 08:50:46 AM »
Guys, probably a dumb question.  I just bought my first box of 30-30 lever evolution last night from an established gun shop in the area.  When I looked at the ammo today, I noticed that several of the cases were very tarnished, and the case heads were headstamped "Frontier"  I haven't got around to shooting any of it yet.  I'm sure it will perform as well as advertised,  and it's just cosmetic, but I'm just not used to new factory loaded ammo looking like I already carried it around in a coat pocket for 20 years.  Has anyone else had this same experience, or did I possible get a bad box of ammo?

Never really read the headstamp on the brass to be honest.  I just loaded them up and they shot great.

Never looked at the Headstamp but the ones I got looked shiny and new.

Hornady uses the 'Frontier' name on their brass, so the headstamp is no surprise.

Don't know why some cases would be tarnished except by handling - may have been a lot of folks looking at the ammo.  I know I'm guilty.

Thanks for the info guys.  Took my son out and just as advertised, 3 shot group just under an inch at 100 yards.  Hopefully we'll soon know how they work on game!

Recently got two boxes at Dick's and are stamped "HORNADY". Maybe a new "collectable" has arisen.

Well, here's another curiosity:  I've purchased I think 6 boxes of the "wunderammo"-all in .30-30.  Cartridges from some runs have primers that appear traditional.  Others have a primer I've never seen previously-it's flat and flush with the cartridge base BEFORE firing.  Maybe to best describe it, I'd relate it to the way a primer might look AFTER firing when case pressure has been excessive.  I've no criticism of the primer (which would place me WAY out of my depth).  I'm just relating a visual curiosity.

So far as performance is concerned, I've put nearly a box through a couple Marlin's, just for kicks and grins.  An '88 vintage 30AS printed three shots into about 7/8" @100 yds. (given cooling time between shots).  So far as I'm concerned, that's pretty impressive.  More work will be required to see how "repeatable" that experiment was.

Mine had the same "tarnished" appearance, and frontier stamping.   Shot fine though, so *shrugs*.... meat in the freezer is name of the game, not the shininess of the ammo....

Just wondering what you thought of the accuracy from them? They are incredibly accurate out of my 336. And the drop chart on the box was right on. I sighted my gun in 3" high at 100 yards and was getting less than 1" groups. I finally had the chance to take a buck with it last week. The shot was about 300 yards so as the chart said I held about 12 inches high and fired. He dropped on the first shot. The bullet was lodged under the hide on the opposite side of the deer. The jacket and core did not separate untill I dropped it while I was looking at it.

Thanks. I love that 336. I've got see through mounts on it so that when I'm hunting brush I can use the iron sight. Then I've still got the scope for longer shots. It made it a little odd to shoot at first with those mounts but after some practice I got used to the scope being set higher.

Sounds like your see through mounts are better than the ones I had.  Mine were inconsistant so I changed them.  Now I have weaver rail, with a nikon 3-9 with quick release rings.  336's are awesome rifles!

My son's is a 336 T that my Dad bought in 1960.  I hunted with it several years as a kid, and now my middle son has it.  I was always impressed with how it shot, and the Hornady ammo makes it even better.  We've not had a chance to shoot it at a range longer than 100 yards, but the accuracy there was great, with groups at one inch.  i can't wait to see how they work on game.

The tarnish comes from someones finger prints.
Someone opened the box a few days or weeks before you and pulled out one or two of the shells.  No big deal.
What are you going to shoot it out of?
