Suggestions For my H&R Handi.
« on: December 15, 2007, 12:32:13 PM »
Just looking for any suggestions from someone with some experience. I'm not a big fan of the bluing on some of my H&R barrels and receivers. Seem to rust very very easily and I take what I think is meticulous care of my fire arms. Prior MP. Just wondering if anyone has done anything after market to any of theirs and has some suggestions. I like the blued and SS look a friend of mine suggested painting it. But I'm not ready to give up look for that kind of ease in care. Thanks for any advice.

I wipe mine down with EEZOX and have never had any of my NEF's rust.

First thing I'd recommend is change gun oils, Breakfree CLP and Eezox are a couple of the best, I've used Eezox for years and never have a rust problem with any firearm, including the forty some H&Rs I own. The only problem I have with H&R's bluing it it's thin, wears off rather quickly, but for a $200 or less firearm, ya can't expect perfection. ;)

FJ,
I wipe my firearms down with a silicon treated gun cloth after I finish
cleaning them. No rust on mine. I don't live in a real humid climate though,
so it might not work for everyone. I second Break Free CLP. I have been
using it for years for lots of things and it works great.

The bluing on my .280's barrel was very thin, and the rag turned orange even the first time I wiped it down, straight out of the box.  After one deer season (and two deer), I called NEF and asked if they'd reblue the barrel.  They did, under warranty.  Hunted with it just this morning and got caught in a heavy downpour.  It was nearly 3 hours before I could wipe the rifle down with BreakFree-- no orange, the reblue from two years ago is still holding up great.

Hey Tim where do you get that eezox do you have to order or can you get it at the bigger outdoor stores. If it works that well it would be a great thing for me

The Gunzone link lists the Mfrs website that has a list of dealers, but the CLP is much easier to find locally, just about any place that sells hardware or auto parts will have it. I bought a case of Eezox about 18 yrs ago, so I've not had to buy any for a looooong time. ;)
