New Rifle need info
« on: December 15, 2007, 12:24:59 PM »
  Heya Guys,

Just got the nephew his first rifle today, H&R super light youth in 243 with the real tree camo stocks .... I know I just saw it recently , but cant seem to find it ... Which weight grain rounds do these little guns tend to favor ??
I bought a box a federal 100 grns' from good old wally world , they also had some 80 grns for a bit more ..Of course once i know what round this rifle likes money is no object , its very very important that this little rifle keeps good consistent accuracy for a first hunt for my nephew ;)
So anything ,tricks tips etc. are welcomed and appreciated

  Thanks in advance,

Wish i could help with the factory ammo but mine has never seen any , as far as handloads , mine just loves the Speer 100 grain SPs , well below 1" @ 100 . Also the 58 grain Hornady V-max shoot like a lazer .

Be warned that the 243 SL is the pickest of all Handi's so it may take awhile to find a load that it likes .

I don't know what you are hunting, but if it is deer then you don't want those 80 grainers. Make sure you stick with a deer hunting bullet.
I own 3 different 243  NEFs and I've had real good luck with both the Federal Fusion 95gr and Remington Core-lokts 100gr. Another one to try would be the Hornady Custom 100gr Interlock.

 Stimpy and Bhod ,

Much thanks ... I figured like most rifles it would have its likes and dislikes, and i thought i had read on another post recently that they favored the heavier weights..

Well like i mentioned i bought a box of the 11 dollar 100 grain Federals , My buddy has a box of the 95 grain fusion ammo .. and im sure there are some other options here local that i ddint get around to looking in on today..
But im also not one to over look the net for variety... I'll be sure to let you all know how it fares and what it ends up liking
Also ... do the 95 grain rounds have less felt recoil over the 100 grain rounds ?? I know felt recoil varies from person to person , but my nephew is a bit of a string bean for 9yrs (A little like I was growing up) So recoil is a issue i dont want to have over whelming him ... thats the reason i had considered the 80 grain bullets.. any help on that front would also be appreciated...
 Thanks again,

P.S. Our hunting for this rifle will involve hogs under 100 pounds , Maybe a little bigger should we get lucky ;)

There is no noticeable difference between the 95s and the 100s. That is a fairly light gun, but it should be fine for him. I have a 10 and a 12 year old they both started with these guns. My 12 yo is already looking to move into a 7mm-08 or a 308. If the recoil become an issue, maybe you can find a guy in your area that would make you some reduced handloads.

As far as accuracy goes, any of the ones listed will probably be more consistent than his ability to shoot them.
I shot my sons rifles first, zeroed them at 100 yds, and then let them practice with a properly zeroed rifle.
With their first couple deer I kept shots to 100 yds or less.

I would still stick with the 95-100 gr deer appropriate loads for those hogs.

Barry,

Preciate the experience you have there on this subject.... I went ahead and bought another box of 100 grn winchesters on the way to the range this morning...both sighted in @100 ..
The Federals and the Winnies both shot nice groups ,Easily 1 inch..Like you my intent from the word go,was to sight it in first then let him come with me and shoot...
But as of right now its ready to rock with either the Feds or Wins in 100 grn ,I did notice that the feds were hitting closer to the bullseye at 50 yrds then the Wins were ,so I'm thinking ill go with the Federals (their a little cheaper too.Wo0t for the pocket book! lol)

Thanks again for the advice guys ... I'll let you all know how things turn out after the hunt
