Muzzle Brake?
« on: December 23, 2007, 12:27:25 PM »
I just shot my 15" .243 Encore and it wasn't bad at all. BUT I have a 15" .270 on the way and think I might maybe want a muzzle brake.
Any opinions on which one works the best, but won't break my bank account.

Thanks

The recoil of the 270 shouldn't be too bad.  If you want a brake, I've found the T/C Muzzle Tamer to work well and is one of the more economical ways to go.

Thompson Center changed their muzzle tamer slightly...I sent a barrel in 3 or 4 months ago and they called me asking if I would mind a variation to the one normally used. It has the same number of holes...5 on each side/top...total of 10. The difference is the sharper edges were rounded and tapered more to aid in holstering the barrel. I am not certain if this change is permanent or not...they said if I did not like it I could send it back at no charge and they would replace it with the old style. I'm happy with the new and old style.

If I can figure out how to attach a photo...I will.

I appreciate the pics.
Think I may go with that.
I like the looks of the "new" better.

You might want to confirm that the new style is in full swing before placing your order.

I have the same on my 6.5X55SM and it does an excellent job!!!!

My neighbor shoots a 15" 270 Win. It doesn't kick bad at all. I'd try it before installing a brake. They reduce recoil (I have one on my 45/70) but are quite noisy and produce some side blast.

A brake that will work better than TC's (IMO) is Holland's Quick Discharge brake.
I have one on a 7mm Dakota & 6.5-284 XP-100's.  Turns recoil into almost nothing.
The dakota pushes a 200 grain bullet @ 2706 fps.  18" barrel.

I agree...but it helps to clear the range of close neighbors with one precaution for yourself; it will knock your spotter scope off the table if positioned too close and in line with the muzzle.  :D

+1 on the T/C muzzle brake.  I tried the OPS Tactical on a 44 mag barrel and it didn't work well at all.  The OPS model will work wonders on a rifle barrel.  Don't worry about the noise...its called hearing protection.   :D
