Another 375?
« on: July 04, 2007, 08:01:42 PM »
What if you took the new, barely on the market, 375 Ruger case and shortened it to 2.015", like the 308, and put it in a short action carbine, necked to .375 or even .358?

Seems to me it would exceed the 35 Whelen, much less the 358 Win, and blow the doors off a 375 Win.  I wonder how far from the 375 H&H it would be?  If the 30-06 length EXCEEDS the H&H, could this round come close to it?  This seems like it could make for a real powerhouse.

Maybe too much of a good thing?

I'll put the case pics (308, 375 Ruger, 350 Rem Mag) up here to compare.  I use the 350 cause it's said to be the short action equivalent of the Whelen.

First the 308

Next the 350 Rem Mag

Then the 375 Ruger

God, Family, and guns, in that order!

You might try looking at the .375/284 for comparison. I'm sure the Ruger case would blow it's doors off.

Or, you might save some work by using the .325 Win case:

Remember, my idea was a shortened Ruger case.  I actually think your has more case capacity, BUT the Ruger case will fit the std magnum bolt head of many of today's rifles.  It is comparable to the 300WM and associated case head sized rounds.

This, of course\, would have to be in a bolt rifle to take full advantage of loading it to the higher pressures of the Ruger case.

I have a .375X284 in a Czech Milsurp Mauser. The Barrel is from McGowen. The case capacity is the same as a 30-06 and you can seat the bullet out farther. I have a long throat chamber and shoot 300 Grain Win Silvertip seated to the first cannelure. The bullet bottom is right at the bottom of the neck.
Atone time I was thinking about a 350 Rem Mag necked up to .375 and putting it in a P14.

Why not hold off for a short while until the Ruger .338 RCM becomes readily available.  Then just increase the neck to either .358 or .375 and you have the case you are looking for with a longer neck for the heavier bullets.  This case will exceed the powder capacity of either .35 Whelen or .350 Rem Mag and should be a fine moderate shooting round for NA big game.  In fact, with the new .338 RCM, I plan to buy one for use here in Alaska.  I don't need the .338 Win Mag for most hunting conditions, yet the .338-06 is not quite large enough for the heavier bullets I'd like to use.  So, I've been waiting until someone wised up and brought out a moderate .338 cartridge that didn't have a belt.  The hand load ballistics of the .338 RCM should easily duplicate those of the .333 Rimless Nitro with heavy bullets and relatively low pressures while still having a substantial velocity increase in lighter weight bullets than the .338-06 or .35 Whelen.

Good to see you're still as cranky as ever Steve, at least nothing has changed since you got mad and took your ball and went home.  :o ;D

I've edited the posts to remove all links to your site however for a fellow who uses as many copyrighted images as you do without permission from the copyright holder you sure are picky. Folks living in glass houses shouldn't throw rocks. Someone might start reporting you to all those copy right owners and they might tell you the same about your illegal use of their material.  ::) Have a nice day now ya hear.  8)

An error was made in my previous post.  It has come to my attention that the photos in the topic were possibly from his site.  Steve, I stand corrected.

The hot links were not "possibly" to my site, they were "definitely" to my site, and for the past three months I have been paying huge overage fees to the host for excessive bandwidth and CPU time.

I don't have corporate sponsors and paid ads on my sites.  They are supported by me and the few little donations I receive.  To have someone utilize my site, my work, to enhance their own site is just "not right", neither is the practice of downloading 1200 owner manuals and then selling them on DVD or CD, as some are doing.

I put my sites on-line as a useful resource for the shooting public, and when it has been abused, as it has been for the past several months, and when other system operators find it easier to hot link to my data and photos and files, I get upset.

Am I "cranky"...you bet your sweet @$$ I am...
