Looking for
« on: December 16, 2007, 02:17:11 PM »
Need some opinions on a jig for drilling and tapping scope mounts. Mostly will be doing shotgun receivers. I'm leaning towards the Williams scope mount drill fixture. I don't see the need to spend 400 plus for a forster. What do the people in the know say? Any experience with these?

Dunno, I just do them on the Bridgeport. If you don't have one you might even see if you can find a deal on a mill/drill machine. They ought to be adequate for drill & tap jobs. I picked one up recently for next to nothing at an auction, it works great as a tapping machine for some of our production work.

Ditto on the mill/drill machine. Got a big ol' Jet I bought back in the '70's. It has done several drill & tap jobs although that wasn't what I bought it for. I have also inletted a couple of stocks with it since I retired.

Hi, Phoneman!

I had to look up the Williams sight mounting fixture in Brownells to remind me of which one I have.  That's the one with sliding parallels that always centers the drill bushings on the receiver, right?

I've used mine for several years now, with an average drill press and am perfectly happy with it.  I found it on sale among a retired gunsmith's tools, and chose between it and the Forster fixture which was more than twice as much.  The unit locates sight mounting holes as accurately as if I was using a milling machine.  Excellent performance for a modestly priced fixture.

I've only used the Forster. It works very well and is quite flexible. I do a lot of unusual jobs and the flexibility is great. I picked up mine on EBay, used at a great price. It's been a long while ago.. I've not used the Willians tool..

The forster factory is about 30 miles from my house. Very nice people but I just can't see spending that much. I actually installed there internet for them a few years ago. Got a tour of there factory. Pretty nice little place.
