LL Bean...
« on: November 29, 2007, 01:17:34 PM »

   Seems like when i was a youngster, my dad used to get those great Maine hunting boots there..he also bought hunting supplies, hide stretchers etc.

  Seems like the LL Bean catalog contained canoes, paddles, animal scents, hunting mittens, traps, snowshoes, etc.

       I lost track of LL Bean for some years..now I am being sent their catalog. The catalog I am getting seems to have very little of the merchandise I recall as LL Bean handling.

    Doggone thing looks more like a "Yuppie Boutique"...

   Is that where LL Bean is today, or am I just getting the wrong catalog ?

That's what it has become.  We now refer to those "pretty" hunters who usually show up with their fancy double barrels, tweed hunting jackets and leather hats, as "LL Bean Hunters".  My dad likes to say, "His pants are way too clean".  You know the type.

It's such a shame.  I live 100mi from the store and found they've moved all of the hunting and fishing out to a separate facility next door.  All those scary $3,000 shotguns.  I don't care for their hunting equip. at all, just not that well thought out and pricey.  Duk is right, LL outfits the "uppercrust".

  Isn't that a shame ! Old man Bean would probably roll over in his grave...

  Dukiller...Bet them ducks you bag can't tell whether they were hit by a$5,000 Perazzi or a $100 NEF !

  Under "bolt action rifles" we have such a discussion going under "what rifles for the rest of us".. interesting..

  DRdoug;

  I have a niece that lives (with her husband & daughter) up that way (in Cumberland)..never happened to talk to her about it !

The only thing their catalog is good for now is starting fires and emergency toilet paper.  I see more stuff for the soccer mom than anything else.  I bet they are making more money though with the switch, just hated to see it.  I can remember one time you could order dry flies and tackle from them.  Those days are long gone.

They still have fishing gear, but only fly fishing.  You just can't afford it unless you have 6 or 7 figure incomes (not including decimal places)!  I make it a point to stop there when I am in Maine, but am more likely to buy something at the Kittery Trading Post.  They actually have affordable guns, including used.  I just looked at their site, and it is starting to look suspiciously like Bean's.

Hey Woodchuck,

I go to Kittery at least every other month and you're right....starting to feel yuppified.
