7mm-08 Texas Buck

Got this buck this evening with the Handi 7mm-08 using 140 grain Remington express, he dropped in his tracks at 150 yards.

My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

Where about Texas? I'm stationed here at Fort Hood and am going nuts over not getting to hunt this year. i can hunt on post but i have to register my rifles and i don't want to do that. My buddy and I got out about 15min Killeen towards Round Rock to a range but that's all we've been doing for months.

lostsniper308, you've got a lot of good places to hunt near you in Bosque, Hamilton, Coryell, Lampasas, Burnett and Llano counties just to name a few but they are all private leases. Mostly season leases. There are a few expensive day leases ... some of those are hunted out which is why they day lease. In all honesty, Fort Hood is your best bet but don't blame you not wanting to register your rifles. Kinda goes against my way of thinking too.

South Texas!

I'm fortunate to have a place to hunt for free at least for this year.

This buck is an old one, with very little left for teeth, and on the decline, and it was killed on a recently acquired ranch, that has been over hunted for a lot of seasons, with most of the bucks seen this year being small fork horns, and generally all small young deer for the most part.

This old buck stepped out when I had been on stand for only about 15 minutes.

It's the peak of the rut here in south Texas, and I've hunted hard since the October archery season, and never saw this buck before, so he was probably nocturnal, or traveled over from another ranch.

Have to agree with what was said about Ft. Hood being one's best bet to hunt.

I't's got a lot of trophy bucks and a lot better quality than the one I shot, and I know of several people who have hunted there and had success.

I've hunted in the past on military installations, and the registration process isn't as painful as one would expect!

Nice buck!  The 140 rem did the job, I've really grown to like 7mm bullets since I've had my .280 Handi-- have killed a 7 point with the 140 CoreLokt and two 6 points with the Speer 145 spitzer so far.

Thanks for all the nice comments, from a bunch of great guys on this forum.

Although it isn't  what some would consider a  monster, it turned out to be a mature buck, that was able to stay alive for several seasons on a ranch that saw heavy hunting pressure.

That's more of a trophy than antler size, and I was really fortunate to have scored, and the sweetest of all was me being able to break the ice with my new 7MM-08 Handi Rifle I bought  just before the season.

Without the help of most of you Handiholics, I wouldn't have been able to harvest that deer, with the confidence it took to take that shot!
