want to buy a handgun out of my home state - I DID IT!!!
« on: November 26, 2008, 04:36:02 PM »
I want to buy a handgun at a Cabela's store.  Reason being, for a retirement gift from the company I worked for, I received a very nice gift card for Cabela's.  We don't have a store in Iowa, so I have to cross a border to purchase.  No, I'm not a criminal!  Shoot, I haven't had so much as a speeding ticket in over thirty years.  Seems laws might make my purchase impossible.  Any one have any ideas to help me out?
Thanks,  Jim

Can Cabelas ship the gun to a FFL in your home state? Adds the FFL fees but that might be a way to go. Ask at the Cabelas store and they can tell you if that is possible.

Definitely has to go through an FFL in your state. Check locally to see who will do it and what the fee will be, as it varies quite a bit. I would let the dealer know what the deal is and look into accessory purchase through your local guy. Understandably many don't like the big stores but a simple explaination of your situation and a chance to sell a scope and rings ought to grease the skids.

You can find dealers willing to transfer to you here...
http://www.gunbroker.com/User/DealerNetwork.asp
Search for dealers near you and give them a call.

goin' to Prairie Du Chein? Wisconsin has a three day waiting period for handgun transactions....even if you could buy it and transport it yourself, you would have to make two trips. Can you cash out the GC and buy the same gun online and have it shipped to your local FFL? Price would probably be better than at Cabela's also........

2eagles, Go to your local dealer, get a copy of his FFl take it to Cabelas buy the gun they will send it to your dealer, he will do the paper work to transfer it to you.  He will charge you for doing the transfer.  Only way you can do it legally.

Got my problem solved!  ;D
I found out a friend has a FFL.  For a cup of coffee, he'll go with me and help me pick out a handgun. Buy it, then transfer it to me.  Yes, I have a permit to purchase.  Thanks for the replies.  Jim

No problem if you know the right people.  We went to Cabela's, purchased the handgun, took it back to Iowa and transfered it to me, LEGALY WITH MY PURCHASE PERMIT.
By the way, Cabela's does have a person with FFL in Iowa that will handle transfers too.

If you crossed the state line with that handgun unregistered you broke the law. You MUST have it transfered for one ffl to another ffl in your state. You can not do it yourself. If you did do it that way id suggest you delete this post as you can get yourself and both dealers in hot water. The batf is not beyond cruising these forms. Just ask Greybeard. I remember a few years ago they were all over this forum.

The gun was purchased by an FFL holder (gun dealer) who can cross state lines with it.  The gun was then essentially 'resold' by the dealer to 2eagles who has all the proper permits and all required documentation was taken care of I'm sure.   No laws were broken.

If I am out of line here, then just tell me and I'll shut up.
williamlayton
If you were a FFL holder at the time of that purchase it would have been legal, but you didn't state that.  Making those statements on this forum is kind of like drivin' past the trooper on the side of the road and flippin' him off, just daring him to come after you.

I really enjoy this forum and would miss it very much if it were shut down by the BATF.  There are some things just better left un-published on here.  IMO, your comments fall into that category.

Just in your Knee?  He might live in your Knee GB but he works the early shift throughout my entire body.  :(
