New QC Check at NEF for Good Lock-up
« on: December 21, 2007, 04:53:16 PM »
Two of the three Handi's I bought had the latch and lug mating surfaces 'cock-eyed' even though the lock-up seemed tight as a bank vault. This adversely affected the accuracy. I have been slowly removing metal from the lug between range sessions to move the reaction force to the center of the lug. I am sure that all that NEF does is check manually for tight lock-up and maybe even employs a feeler gauge to make sure that the standing breech is tight and then moves on to the next assembly. What they could do is check the stiffness of the lock-up with a little tooling and instrumentation. What I mean is mount the finished rifle in a fixture and apply a known load to the end of the barrel. If the displacement exceeds a predetermined value it would require more fitting to assure even pressure along the width of the lug shelf. I am sure this would take a little development work and add to the cost of each rifle but it would also add to the proportion of rifles that shoot well 'out-of-the-box'.

My $.02CDN worth.

Do any of your frames have the view port, the large blind plug on the right side? That's what it's for, basically.

Here again, those of us in the US don't need to worry about that on a factory fitted barrel, H&R will fix it if there's an accuracy issue, you Canadians don't have that luxury, or at least it's not as easy, although you do have two service centers.

Hi Tim:

Two of my Handi's have the port. One has(had) the 'cock-eyed' shelf fit-up and one is 'smack on'. The other doesn't have the port and was cock-eyed. Standardizing the stiffness in pounds per inch would be the 'acid test' for good solid fit-up. I don't know what good the port is except to see that the amount of engagement is right.

Have a great Christmas and a Happy New Year Tim and all.
