tight primer pockets
« on: December 27, 2007, 10:40:33 PM »
Is there an easy way to open up primer pockets that are too small?  I'm shooting some .303 Brit from S&B, with the Norma and American cases the primers fit great, but with the S&B they are so tight its almost impossible to get the primers in all the way. There is no pocket crimp.
I hate not to reload the S&B, its fine loaded ammo, and I have lots of cases.
Anybody else have to deal with this?

You can open them up with a pocket knife, but with my fingers you will ruin alot of cases.

There are primer swages from practically all makers of dies. Most common use is to remove the military crimp, but they will "uniform the primer pocket" size too. Most. Buy carefully. And don't forget to lube.

The benchrest crowd really get serious about this sort of thing and you can get super critical (and expensive) tools, dies to swage or cutters to ream... Wilson, Sinclair, etc. This is not at all uncommon in foreign brass and if you have a lot, then a great investment. HAPPY HOLIDAYS. luck.

rio, something you can try on a couple cases is take a #2 pencil and run it around the sides of the pocket a couple times, the graphite will let primer slide in and seat easier. That trick has worked for me for years on tight pockets. After a firing or two pockets will be fine.
