Cannons in Guadalajara
« on: November 30, 2007, 12:38:25 AM »
I have to go to Guadalajara for a couple of days before Christmas (business trip).

What's there of significance (to take pictures of) should I get a few hours off?

I did put in on the confuser map program - 2000 + miles - 4 days.
No, I'm flying down.
Can't bring liquids back on the plane, but the flea mkt might well happen.

Basic Espanol

?quanto coste?  How much does it cost?

?Donde está el baño?  Where is the bathroom?

?Donde están los cañones?   Where are the  cannons?

Cerveza por favor.  Beer please.

Won't need much else.

And you can bring liquids back, in your suitcase, not in your carry on.

We're aggressively seeking additional colonial Spanish cannons similar to those in the picture for a research project.  They usually range in length from about 30 to about 50 inches and in weight from about 75  to about 160 lbs., so bringing some back would not be much of a problem, just declare excess baggage and make sure they are unloaded before checking them in.  All the presidios in Mexico and other areas colonized by Spain had these small cannons, so there are probably some in Guada, you just have to ask around.  If you dont want to take them with you, maybe get some contact information for our team.

Oh and you know what they say, "a picture is worth..." so print the picture out and take it, then point to it when you are asking them the question-guaranteed much better results..

I am amazed at how little there is on the internet on cannons in GU.

There are about 5 museums listed.

I'll certainly take the picture and ask around.

Headed down there on the 17th.

Well, this time tomorrow, the Good Lord willing and the creek don't rise, I'll be in Guadalajara.  Looks like work will be from dark to dark, so might not have much chance at cannon pix, but I WILL ask around.

Stay tuned, back on Thursday night.

I am EXHAUSTED.  Not a chance to get out and do any serious searching.  20 minute taxi ride from hotel to work early then late returning.  NO one I rubbed shoulders with knew anything about cannons.  The local folks on the production floor, as well as most other folks in the area, worked 12 hour shifts.

Great time.  The people I encountered EARED my respect for their warmth, values, and professional practices.  A nation struggling to do better.  Construction everywhere.  Little shops and restaurants EVERYWHERE.  A few words of broken spanish and a smile was our ticket.

Next time, now that I've learned the cost (time) we're planning a day or so of vacation after work befroe returning.
