Considering an NEF in .25-06, good or bad rifle?
« on: December 13, 2007, 04:34:39 PM »
I've owned a .25-06 Winchester bolt action and LOVED the caliber, didn't like the weight! :)

So now I'm considering getting an NEF in .25-06.  What kind of luck are you guys having/had with the NEF in .25-06?

We have other NEF's in the house .22WMR, 12ga, 20ga and like them! But I haven't tried a centerfire yet and would like input before getting the .25-06!

Thanks and Merry Christmas! :)

I have a NEF ultra in 25-06 and I like it. I use it mostly for whitetail but I think it would work fine on yotes & b-cats as well. I use 120gr Noslers on deer. I load my own ammo so I may try several different weights for smaller game. Any suggestions?

Most of the 25-06s have been good shooters.
Mine (and many others) would put two or three rounds in a very tight group.
Plenty for hunting.
After that I guess the barrel started heating and groups opened up.
Not so handy sighting in.

All in all I wish I had kept it.

My 25-06 Ultra does the same thing, but that's good enough for me, two touching and the third making it a 1" group. ;) Does it with the Federal 115gr NP and the Hornady 117gr BTSP. Hildy has a great load using the 75gr Vmax for varmints in the 25-06 thread below.

Any extraction or ejection problems?

Are there any extraction or ejection problems with the .25-06?  Thanks!

No more than there are with any ejector if you don't keep the chamber clean and dry once it's been polished. Current production extractors make sticking brass a non-issue.

Thanks Tim! :)  That's the main thing I was worried about! It sounds as if accuracy isn't a problem...I'll finally be looking at another .25-06 now! :)  I sold my bolt action about 4 years ago and have missed the caliber dearly!

The NEF/H & R website lists the weight of the NEF 25-06 and the H & R Ultra 25-06 as 7-8 lbs, the variance due to the length of barrels, with  the 26 inch barrel of the 25-05, I would guess that they weigh 8 lbs. That said, I have an Ultra in 25-06 and love it, although she is heavy. Sits along side my Winchester model 70 featherweight ( 6 1/2 lbs ) in the safe, sure can tell when when I picked up the Ultra instead of the featherweight. Not trying to put a negitive spin on this, just letting you know, they are heavy.

Elkslayer makes a good point, my Ultra with Burris FFII 3-9x in medium Signature Zee rings weighs 9lbs-13oz.

My 25-06 shoots like others, first 2 shots side by side and the third out an inch or so. I love it and have been practicing and shooting well out to 400 yards with it all year. The practice paid off nicely:

This years buck says the Handi 25-06 is a great rifle:

296 yard heart shot

A nice 10 pointer using factory Federal 115gr Nosler Partitions. Shot from the prone position with Harris bipod on a flat rock. The deer humped up and lifted his front legs off the ground when hit, made it about 10 yards and crumpled down the side of a hill. Yep, great caliber, and great rifle!

I have a 25-06 ultra that shoots very well.  When I first got it, after two or three shots it would begin stringing subsequent shots vertically at increments of about 1".  I sent the barrel to 300 Below in Illinois for cryogenic treating.  Now with 100 gr. Barnes XLC's I can shoot sub 1/2" 3 shot groups and 5 shot groups of less than 3/4".  It's a cheap fix.  Good luck.

Weight is relative to who is carrying it. The 25-06 is a fantastic round & I predict that you will like it.
