Headspace problem -- maybe
« on: December 23, 2007, 07:17:42 AM »
Guys , i'm working up loads for a new rifle in a round that i have never done before , the 25/06 and am getting a -.013 headspace , will this be a problem or should i do the cream-o-wheat fireform to move the sholder forward first .

thanks in advance .

Stimpy,

This is your 25-06 H&R, right? With .013", I'd form a false shoulder on the neck to insure properly formed brass from the get go, for the .25-06, I'd run the brass thru a .280(best) or 30-06 sizing die to expand the neck, then partial neck size in a 25-06 die until you have the minimal headspace.  I used this technique for the .280 Improved and my 375H&H TC barrel, as posted in the NEF FAQs, "Handloading for an Improved chamber in a Handi" or something like that, IIRC!!

Of course, if it's a factory fitted barrel, you could always get it replaced, although it would be an extractor barrel. If it's a used barrel, I'd flat file the breech face until factory brass is flush or slightly above depending on the barrel to frame gap on the frame I'm fitting to.
