480 question for Veral
« on: December 26, 2007, 06:34:14 PM »
I have been shooting 44's for years & like the performance for Deer, Hogs & such. Veral, my question to you is when we compare your
bullets in 44 & 480, the best weight& vel. range in each caliber, how big is the edge that I would obtain by going to the 480. The use I am speaking of is Elk, Bear, Moose, Bison, the biggest American Game. I like the looks of the new 5 shot SRH in 480 & am thinking of an excuse to buy another handgun. How much better killer do you think it would be with your best bullets for each?

The first and most serious question I must address is that you are looking for an excuse to buy a gun you like the looks and feel of. -- If you are anything like me, you'll buy the gun.  You'll get a very valid excuse without help from anyone!

But it won't kill any quicker than a 44 which is properly loaded with LBT bullets, as the 44 with full power WFN's or WLN'is too much for quickest kills, though it needs full throttle loads with the heavy LFN's to get optimum kill speed.  And I'm talking game of any size on the North American continent. The 480 WILL do it with less velocity, and might be better if you want to take an elephant with a revolver, but the 44 with my heavy LFN's has done that very well for quite a few customers..

Thanks for the info!! This shows how lethal the 44 is with the right bullet. according to this, it is the only big game cartridge needed. I have thought for some time that getting a 454 would not really gain me anything, but I thought a 480 might, but I guess it is horsepower I would not utilize.

You are right about getting an itch to buy a new gun, but I have a long gun or two to buy yet & I may update my bow, so that may be a more logical direction.

Thanks again!!
