Encore pistol
« on: December 17, 2007, 03:20:08 PM »
OK guys here is what I want/plan to get... a Encore 30-06 blue/walnut with a 15" barrel. I'm going to use Warne maxima bases and rings and a TC 2-7 scope. I'm a newbe to hunting pistols but thought i would like to give it a try,,, what will the recoil be like? What kind of accuracy can I expect out of this set up? Thanks!

Accuracy wise, your proposed setup, if all is put together and working properly, should get no worse than 1.5 inch 3 shot groups at 100 yards off the bench.  I've shot an Encore 30/06 handgun barrel and thought the recoil a little bit more tolerable than a Contender in 44 Rem. Mag.  In other words, I didn't think it too bad.

I like the T/C scopes but I like the Leupold 2.5-8X handgun scopes a bit better.  The good thing about T/C and Leupold scopes is that if you have a problem, the company takes care of it with no excuses even if you're not the original owner.

Warne Maximal bases are great in my experience.  Make sure you attach the base with Loctite or it will come loose.  You don't need Loctite on the rings but make sure they're really tightened down or the scope will move under recoil.

Thanks for the info! That sounds pretty good, should I just go ahead and put the red Loctite on the base and be done with it?

Your setup is very similar to my first Encore hence the user name Encore3006. I was introduced to pistol shooting and taught to avoid a death grip. I originally had difficulty with the muzzle lifting high off the sandbag and with the T/C scope slipping through the two rings due in part to the high gloss finish. So, I sent the barrel to T/C Custom Shop and had a muzzle tamer installed. I then sent the barrel to SSK Industries for their 6-hole base and 3-ring setup. I replaced the wood grips with the rubber grips. The result was essentially no muzzle lift and I can use a relaxed grip and feel like I have better control This was my experience and yours maybe different. My approach is more conservative than others. I am not certain if SSK used locktite or not on the base. I have "harvested" two elk and one black bear with the setup and can confidently shoot an 8" pie-plate at 200 yards from a mono-pole shooting stick with 180gr. Federal High Energy, Nosler Partition bullets. Good luck on your venture!

I went to the 308 instead. I looked at the 06 as I already had ammo and reloading equipt. 308 has less recioil anda little less vel. but more manageable

out of the short tubes you get nothing with the 30-06  that the 308 cant match until you get the the heavy bullets then the 30-06 will have a slight edge very slight

you will have a lot more muzzle blast with the 30-06 as well as recoil.

totally agree wit rickyp if you want to stay with a factory offering i would go with the 308 but if you want the added oomph I would go with a 338-06 0r the 338-06AI in a 16.5" tube or maybe even a .338 federal

With the 16.5" barrel he could make it into a rifle legally.
