New to forum and handgun hunting
« on: January 22, 2008, 05:19:55 PM »
Thought i would take a moment and tell you this is my first year hunting with handgun i usually bow hunt and muzzle load and took one deer each during those season but i have a Ruger  bisley  hunter 44mag with Burris 1.5x3 and decided to try hunting with it this year and have had a great time taken two this last month both taken down cleanly and quickly using  factory 240 grain Winchester hollow soft points one was 65 yards and another at 80 yards also had a  opportunity to roll a coyote at 90-100 yards. I am hooked.   Good thing my state of Iowa ,allows  hunting with pistol during other seasons . Look forward to reloading this caliber next year ,and talking to members of this Forum  :)

Bow hunters make good handgun hunters. Just think of it as a noisy bow and you'll do great. Welcome aboard.

Welcome!

Hunting with handguns is additive. I started with a ruger mk2 on squirrel and rabbits. Then got a desert eagle in 44mag (didn't know any better at the time) with a 10 inch barrel. and got turned on to a bisely in 45 cot as well as the Thompson contender and encore series, stay way from those as you will start buying barrels for no good reason  :)  (that's all tongue in cheek)

That is a great gun to use hunting.  I have the bisley hunter in 44mag and I enjoy shooting it.  I use my smith 460 for whitetail, but if I would have gotten my bisley first I don't think I would have bought the 460.  The nice thing about the 44mag is their are many different bullets out there to choose from.

I really like those contender pistols wish i could hunt with neck down calibers 30-30 etc for deer  state wont allow in pistols, would be great for those longer shots in woods or for varmints.
my next pistol will probably some short of Long range varmint gun, pick up new Ruger charger love it for small game. trying to get old 223 xp pistol from brother if right price
will look into contender pistol next show might be the ticket will have to decide on caliber.

GB that was good !
would ya say a revolver was a loud re-curve and a single shot a loud compound ?
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

When you get ready to start loading your own try a 240 gn. Sierra bullet over a max. load of Win.-296 or H-110. GB would probably tell you to try the Hornady XTP bullets, which are also very accurate, but I think I get better terminal performance with the Sierra`s,

youve got a fine deer hunting rig there and you no doubt will be hooked and sell all your rifles to buy handguns.
