What slugs to use.
« on: December 02, 2007, 10:17:46 AM »
I finally used up my ten year supply of shotgun slugs this year. ( mostly with sighting in and practice ). Over the past ten years I'm sure the ammo companys have made some improvements. So which one do you guys like the best in your shotguns? I'm shooting an 870 with an improved cylinder bore. Thanks,   RRM

grab some of the cheap Winchester foster slugs (usually $2 - $3 a box). they shoot good in any shotgun I've ever put them thru.

Rat,

I'm using Remington Copper Solid sabots with great results, but they're for rifled barrels only. I have recently tested some Brenneke KO slugs, around $2.30 a box, and had almost as good of accuracy, and they work well in rifled or smoothbores. The Remingtons are around $13.00 for 5. After the season is over, I'll re-sight in for the KOs, much cheaper than the Remingtons, and similar results.

I have to agree with 45/70 fan Winchester Super X rifled slugs shot the best in both of my smooth bores.

I suggest any of the Brennekes and as an alternative a Foster style slug, stay away from any of the hyper-expensive sabot slugs....<><....;)

I'd vote for the Winchester Super-X also.  I use the three inch, 1 oz.   Had real good luck with them for the last fifteen years.

For rifled barrels, Winchester bri 3 inch std. velocity. They aint pretty but they shot like a house a fire.

Remington CS  = $13.00 for 5.
Brenneke KO's = $  2.30 for 5.

"almost as good of accuracy, and they work well in rifled or smoothbores."

an easy decision and correct decision on your part, and one with which I agree.
After trying many different slugs I also shoot mostly Brennekes...  ;D ;D ;D ;D
