7mm-08

Do you gain much in a 7mm-08 in a 22 inch barrel over a 20 inch barrel? Also what would be a good lightweight rifle in that caliber?

I have the Ruger  All weather lightweight in 7-08, 20" barrel. no, you don't lose a lot. Great gun and great cartridge. ;)

I have a Stevens 200 7-08 that I cut the barrel to 18 1/2". Actually improved it's accuracy, and it's a very lite and handy rifle now, I shoot a 15" Encore 7-08 too, it has been deadly on deer. I don't think barrel length is that important with a 7-08..........

I lost roughly 90fps when i went from a 24 to a 22.   According to the loading manuals you will loose an aggregate of 90 fps from a 22 to an 18.  If i recall correctly.

According to  Waters in his Pet Loads the 7-08 does best with a 24" barrlel.  That being said, if one doesn't need the extra power and wants a shorter gun, go for it. All my guns have at least 24" barrels and they don't seem too long. I  find it easier to hold on with a longer barrel and don't do a lot of carrying. capt david
