After a tough hunt yeaterday morning, i decided to site in the new 45-70 Ultra and 444 handi. The Ultra is scoped with a 3200 3x9x40 in Tally's and the 444 is scoped with a Burris shortmag 3x9 in Warne rings. I had Leverevolution rounds for both and some rem loads for the 444 and some of my 300gr hand loads for the 45-70. I started with the 45-70 and the LE loads. I was on paper on the first shot and moved to 100. I ran a patch down the Barrel and shot 1 round. I ran another patch and shot another shot and she was sighted in. I cleaned her again and shot 3. The first 2 were touching and the third opened it up to just above an inch. I cleaned her again and shot a group with my hand loads. they were 2 inches high and about an inch and a half to the right but they were an honest 1 3/4 inches apart. I will work on a better load after the season ends and finnish up this year with the LE loads.
The 444 is a whole different story. My shots moved all over and I quickly realized that the scope was the culprit. Unfortunatly, I have no real results to report but I have to say that the recoil was much better than i thought that it would be. In this light synthetic Handi, i was expecting worse but I have to admit that I was very pleasantly surprised.
I also shot a couple of other rifles while there. I changed the scope on my Tikka 300wsm and it sighted in quickly and shot its usual sub moa But my Rem 204 was the star of the day. I brought it just to seperate the poundings from the other but I had a good outing with it. After a few fowling shots, I shot a 5 shot cloverleaf with the first 2 shots going in the same hole. You have to love that.
The Scope will go back to Burris this week. I have heard great things about there service, so i am sure that I will not have any problems. I also have an old Redfield 6x that needs to go to Miami to be repaired. I will send them both off and I think that the redfield will probably go on the 444 when it gets back.
