Just wanted to share some picks of my elk hunt this year. The first one is me on the side of a mountain the gun is a TC Renegade with a stainless GM LRH 15/16" 50 cal barrel and Lyman 57 peep sight. The load used was 100g of Graffs FF pushing a 460g Hornady Great Plains FP HB.

It was a long hard hunt. It snowed every day witch made it easy to find fresh tracks, but the elk were moving faster than I could. They would go 4 or 5 miles before bedding. I followed tracks every day and must have walked about 20 miles or more.

At about 11am on the last day of a 5 day hunt we found some fresh tracks on the way out and decided to give it one more shot. The shot was 40 yards I was resting on a tree next to a fence when she stepped out of the trees. The night before I had left my rifle in the truck instead of putting it in the case like I usually do and as my luck goes I had a delay fire of about a second. I hit her in the neck and she dropped right there.

My uncle took the pictures of me with it but I guess he doesn't know how to take pictures cause they werent on my camera.??? All and all it was a geat hunt and great time spent with my dad and uncles. ;D
The bullet did not exit I will post a pick of it when and If I get it back from the processor.

Great hunting story!
A hundred grains of black powder and a 460 grain lead slug, sounds like a good elk load!

Congrats on your hunt. It just shows what a little determination and perseverance can get ya. Good looking rifle too! How do you like the Green Mtn Barrel?

I like it a lot. I have only shot it about 40 times so far. The best group thus far with that load is 2"@ 100 yards. I am really glad I got the stainless barrel especially with the weather we had on this hunt. I got the idea for this setup from the forum.

Yep it worked real well. I had a goal with this load. After reading some of the arguements about round ball vs conical I wanted to try to get total penetration on an elk. This cow makes #7 for me all with a ML. I have never had a bullet go all the way thru on an elk, nor have I seen it happen. So I got the heaviest bullet I could find. I got 5 boxes at Sportsmans Warehouse for $7 per 20. I guess since this bullet was discontinued they didn't think to rase the price. If not for the delay I might have hit her in the right place as she was quartering away at 40 yards, but I guess I cant complain cause she dropped. Now I am just waiting to see how well the bullet held up.

How did you get a 15/16 on your Renegade? The Renegade is a 1" barrel channel? Here is my whole list. 
On this rifle I use a Lyman peep and a Lyman 17 aml globe sight with lee shavers inserts. It is a hunting rifle first target rifle second. it is a 50 cal


This rifle is a .458 I made it for deer, and antelope hunting. It seconds as a target rifle. It has a Lyman peep and a Lee Shavers globe front sight with a level.


This rifle is my son's 50 cal. it is a hunting rifle with a Lyman peep and a Lyman globe with lee shavers inserts.


I like my set up for each rifle a lot. They have served me well and are dependable. I couldn't ask for anything better.  Ron

I remember that thread. I have slipped a 1" into a 15/16 and man it was just too tight for my taste. But then again I glass bedded my 45 so I could get consistent groups under 2" it is tight now.  Did you pin your ram rod from green mountain?  Ron

I thought that area looked familiar, was the second picture of Slaughter Mesa? I was hunting Unit 15 the week before your hunt (1st-5th). My hunt got cut short by 2 days due to some issues back home. I was into elk 3 times the first day but they were always running and I couldn't get a shot off fast enough. I didn't see anything but tracks days 2 and 3. My son had a couple of chances on day 2 but wasn't fast enough. After all the hunting over the previous 5+ weeks they were very nervous and were seldom standing still. There seems to be more elk in unit 15 this year than in the past few years but I just didn't get any good shot opportunities this year.

Congrats on your harvest, that's a tough hunt to fill a tag in.

I actually got the 15/16" barrel for another rifle, then I decided to use this one instead. I don't use the GM rod I have a solid aluminum rod that I got years ago. After the holiday's I am  going to order new rods from Hubbard's.

That picture was taken by Hardcastle Gap or Black Peak can't remember for sure. I don't  usually go east of HWY 32. I only saw 5 elk the whole time. My uncle said there was 8 in the group with this one but I only saw 2 of them. I agree on the hunting pressure by the last hunt the elk are in small groups of 2 to 8 and very nervous. I didn't get to hunt 15 last year but from what I have seen there seems to be considerably less elk. Maybe they all moved east of 32.:-\ We have been hunting that area for 9 years now and always get at least one(except last year).

The one I have now I got from Wal-Mart 8 to 10 years ago. You can get one from the link I posted. He calls it a HI-TECH RAMROD. I got one of his Huntsman rods and the quality was excellent. Best of all with Mr Hubbard you don't have to send him any money up front. He will make what you need ship it to you and if you don't like it you can just send it back. Hard to find service like that anymore. ;) :D
