410 Barrel lenth?
« on: December 23, 2007, 06:14:50 AM »
I want to get a 10" 410 barrel. Do you think a 12" is that much better ballistically ? I like the 10" for handling and ease of carry. Thanks in advance for your opinion.

I have the 10" barrel, to be honest at the ranges you will be using it, it really wont make the much of a difference. I use mine for rabbits and to lower the local pigeon population, so far so good. Just keep your shots reasonable.

I would go with what you like better. IMO its the most fun barrel they make.

good luck and have fun

Dave

I have one in 10" for my contender and a 12" for my encore. I borrowed a 15" barrel  for an encore
I will tell you the 15" was not very handy in the woods. the 10" is nice but I feel the 12" in a bit nicer it is a longer "swing" but tames some of the recoil and gives a very little extended range

I have a 10" octagon, with the external removable choke, and I really like it for ease of use and light weight to carry in the field.  Recoil is not bad either.  I would like to get another one with a vent rib, so I can sight down the barrel a little better, but still no complaints with the one I have.

I too have been thinking about getting a .45/.410 Contender Barrel. I would like to try to take a Pheasant or two with this barrel at close range. I was wondering how the different length barrels would effect the swing / follow through. Thanks for the info.

One of my wife's uncles in South Dakota had a stroke years ago and was an avid hunter before.  He currently uses a youth shotgun, but has also been looking into the 410 contender or the revolver for pheasant.

I have 10", 14", and 16.25".  Yes the 10" is easier to carry around, but the 16.25" swings much smoother.  I use it on rabbits and early season squirrels.  I definitely shoot the longer barrel better.  I doubt there is much difference in the ballistics.  I keep the shots down to about my bow range...20-25 yd., which, in the woods is further than it sounds.  I've also done a good bit of pheasant hunting in South Dakota...I had a tough enough time downing them with my 12ga....Good Luck.  Walt

Thanks for your thoughts. I've decided on the 10". Watch for a WTB post coming soon.

I have a 10" with the vent rib and woodcock over the dogs is an absolute blast!!! 30 yards is pushing it but under that is very doable and quite deadly. 3" #6 or 7 1/2  work really good. just my .02   and for carrying  during deer season the 10" is not that bad holstered on the hip.
