Octagon barrel
« on: February 16, 2008, 07:35:17 AM »
I have always used 10" or 14" bull barrels on my Contender but I have an opportunity to pick up a 10" 357 Octagon barrel for a good price. This is not a 357 Shot barrel. Any "gotchas" I should consider before jumping on this? Blueing and bore look good and I kind of like the slimmer profile. Thanks guys.

Hi
It will take a oct. forearm, and it may have split locking lugs. If your frame is newer you will need to replace them. They are easy to replace, just a roll pin holds them in and T/C has one piece for $10. No real problems.

Thanks Jim. As long as it's a good shooter I can handle the rest. I've had to call TC a couple times now for the newer two piece locking bolts. Seems like most of the older barrels I've picked up need that upgrade in order to fit my G2 frame. Usually the action will close but the hammer won't cock. Changing out the locking bolts has always taken care of that problem for me.

You will also realize heavier recoil than with a bull barrel.  Comparing my full bull .45LC to my octagonal .45LC, even with relatively mild loads (the octagonal barrel has wall thicknesses under 0.09" at the muzzle) the recoil can be unpleasant - particularly with wood.  Rubber helps a little.  Your .357 octo recoil shouldn't be bad, just a bit heavier.
