New Pro Hunter problem
« on: December 29, 2007, 12:09:54 PM »
I just took out a new TC prohunter.  All was well, except that the breech would not close over the primer.
Without the primer in place the action closes just fine.  The primer will not enter quite as far as flush, and appears to be what is holding it open.  Is this a common problem?  Have I put the breech plug in wrong?  It looks like there's only one way to get it in.
I'll really apprecitate any help.  Very discouraging, with the new rifle and all.

Thanks a lot,

Mike

It is possible that you have not gotten the plug down to the last set of interrupted threads? I don't own one but have handled them a few times, but if I remember correctly it will not close period if the last set of threads are not engaged. The plug does have an "UP" and a small stem that would prevent you from installing it upside down. Could it be that the extractor is jamming in the channel?

The first time I looked at one the gunsmith removed the plug and re-installed it, but didn't get it down to the last set of threads. The extractor was jamming on the notch and would not close without a primer, so that may not be your problem.

What type of primer are you using? They are not all the same dimensionally, especially the length. Maybe try a different brand of primer.

Make sure the plug is completely tight, the O-Ring does cause a bit of resistance.

what primer are you using? There are certain ones that are slightly longer and will not work with the encore.

Remove the breach plug and look into the barrel and make sure nothing is blocking the last set of interrupted threads. Then place back in and be sure to push it all the way down until it goes no further and then turn 90 degrees and put in a primer(make sure its unloaded) and close. If it doesn't its either your primer or something is wrong with the breach plug.
