Replacement scope suggestions....
« on: February 11, 2004, 10:19:54 AM »
I am thinking of replacing my Vari-X III 4.5X14X50 with a new scope for
my .308 Winchester HVS. I will be using it mostly for target shooting 100 to 600 yards and the ocasional whitetail on a bean field.

Should I upgrade for extra zoom and if so to what?
Thanks!

Well first, let me say, send that worthless Leopold down here to me. I'll clean it up & find something to put it on.
If you want more power, like a 6-24, there are several. But if I wanted better than what you have, I believe I'd look at Zeiss or Smit & Bender or Doctor or Night-force. All of these are $1000 + so you will want to look thru your catalogs & find what you want at the best price you can.
If it were me, I'd stay with what you got. I have a 6-24 x 40 on my Huskey, made by Tasco(a world class), but I know it ain't as clear at upper power as your scope is. And if it's not, your scope needs to go back for repair. JMHO.

Take care Jon,glad to see ya here on my little piece of GB's BB.

Thanks Jose. I called a local dealer yesterday that was going to offer me $305 dollars for it trade in. I laughed my $%# off while I was hanging up on him.

I was considering a Monarch 6X20X44, but I don't think 5.5 power is worth changing right now.

I am just going to hang on to it right now. It is shooting tighter than I have ever shot before. Last Sun. 3 shot group at 100 yrds was 5/8" to centers.
200 yrds was 1 1/8" on a 3 shot group to centers. That is not even tweeking the load or really working on technique that hard.

What am I thinking?!  :-D

I am afraid to move it! I might jinx the whole thing!

Take care every one.

What Reticle are you using in your Leupold?

You have the right scope...what you may need is the Leupold Custom Shop to give it a once over and install Mil-Dot (assuming you don't have it) the cost is about $140 and will let you range targets. Leupold is offering a new batch of reticles in their 2004 line...might be worth a look.

I own both Leupold and Nikon. Both are great scopes but you will never beat the superior service Leupold offers.
