I always have to jump in on 7mm08 discussions.  I have 2 remington model 7's.  I think for 300 yards and under they are perfect.  I like the 139 or 140 grain bullets.  I have a couple of buddys who never seem to have a rifle come deer season(they have other priorities, like women--I finally settled on 1 woman and alot of rifles).  I do not know the count but these 2 rifles have taken lots of deer and several hogs-all one shot kills.  Really great round.  I do have a couple of friends that own the 7mm08.  I have really yet to see one that did not shoot well.  I sold my model 7 .243 after I had taken a few animals with the 7mm08.  I know everyone has a favorite.  I do still hunt whitetails with a 25.06 and 270 wsm.  There are alot that work fine, after we all know it is mainly shot placement and bullet type.  I won't say it here but I heard a guy say think of your favorite thing in your hand, it could be a model 7 7mm08.  You should try one.  I have really flattened a couple of coyotes as well.  Try one Dale, A guy always needs a new toy.

OK,

I am way late on putting in this post, but:

  1.  The 7mm-08 is way to big for varmints that are woodchuck (groundhog) size or smaller.  It is only a shade in size smaller than the .308 Winchester, and at longer range, actually packs more punch than a .308 Win.  It was never intended or marketed as a combo-cartridge, for the simple fact that is isn't.  It was invented and developed by long range steel sillouette shooters, and then to everyone's surprise, it proved to be a remarkable deer killer.  Word of mouth spread among deer hunters, and it was through deer hunters that this cartridge emerged in the general market and thrived.

My advice?  Sell your .243, and get a  7mm-08 for deer and .22 Hornet for varmints.  It is a great groundhog round out to 150 yards, very accurate, and relatively low noise.

  2.  In the western part of Virginia, woodchuck is standard eating fare.  They are very good if they are young.  The big older ones are very tough.  Woodchuck Merango is a classic southern dish.  They are much better than squirrel, in that they live mainly on soft grasses and grain.  And, unlike squirrel, when skinned, they do not look like rats!

  Regards, Mannyrock

When younger me and a buddy killed a ground hog. We then were informed that you don't kill anything you don't intend to eat, long story short, young ground hog tastes like old rabbit to a 12 yr. old.

Well I don't eat Groundhog. I don't much care if I blow them into little pieces. I am doing my farmer buddies a favor. I happen to think it is a great crossover round although I have also been looking at the 25-06. Dale

It is. 7mm-08 is my favorite deer caliber. Shoot 160 grain Nosler Accubond. Had a Handy Rifle until a drugy stole it, only thing I didn't get back. Will get another rifle in the 7mm-08. Handy Rifle was very accurate, but am planing on getting something nicer. Regardless, I will always have a 7mm-08 in my hunting collection.
Thanks,
Bobby

I've shot some 160's thru one of my 7-08's as a "wonder what if" kinda thing.  Didn't have any probs with the throating.  Didn't Chrony the loadings or spend a lot of time on it. Probably around 2500+ according to the book. They grouped very well. And if I only had a 7-08, I'd take it elk hunting but it wouldn't be my first choice as a elk cartridge.
I've shot some WT deer with the 154gr Horn RN bullet and it will do a number on them.
IMO the 7-08 with a 140gr bullet is an ideal deer rifle.

Mannyrock's thumbnail was pretty close to right but you don't have to sell your .243. You can have it rebarrelled to a 7-08 or a .260. That's another good deer cartridge.

The only synthetic stocked sporting rifle I have is an old (18.5 in Bbl) M-7 in 7/08.  It has become my dedicated backup rifle I always carry with me in case whatever primary rifle I'm using goes south during a trip.  I load it with the old 162 gr Nosler solid base bullets at around 24 - 2500 fps and have a lot of confidence in it!

I am with the others here on the 6.5  I have two 7mm-08 and a 308 which are VERY good rounds.  The 6.5, however, never stops to amaze me.  Two deer over 400 yards last year and one at 500 yards!!!

The rifle just loves the 100gr Nosler Partitions and it hammers the deer!!!  The only thing I would say to anyone considering the 6.5 is this...
If you don't reload you are not going to be able to find the true potential of the 6.5.  Reloading is a must but if I had only one rifle the 6.5 would be it.

Happy shooting

Tikka makes a 6.5 Swede.  I have 2 tikka's and plan on having a couple more.  Fantastic rifles for the money.  Both my 243 and 300 WSM are sub moa with just bargain ammo for wally's.  I have been looking at the 6.5 Swede and will probably add one in the near future.  Then again, I want to add a 7-08 as well!
