Cast Bullet Rifle
« on: December 31, 2007, 06:36:58 AM »
After having surgery on my shoulder I am looking for a cast bullet rifle (Less Recoil, easy on the shoulder) & wondering if any one has used C B s in the H&R rifles?  8)
I spent a lot of money on Guns, Wild Horses & Wilder Women but I guess I just wasted all the rest!

I shoot mild cast bullet loads in all my handi rifles with Trailboss or Unique.   I shoot 357, 44 mag, 38-55, and 500 S&W.  All can be very enjoyable to shoot with light recoiling loads.

About all i shoot anymore in my 30/30 and 45/70 are cast bullets and have been toying with the idea of some in my 218 Bee just to see how they do , if you can get your hands on a copy of the LEE manuel , it has a bunch of loads for cast in rounds like the 30/06 and 308 along with some others that i don't remember .

I've had good luck with cast bullets in my .357 Maximum Handi. The bore slugs .357", but I'm currently sizing them to .359". The gas-check Lyman 358627, 215 grains, seems to be a good bet for a deer bullet. I have tried the Lyman 311041, a flat-point GC bullet of around 170 grains weight, in my .30-'06 Handi. Results have been okay so far, but the cold and snow up here in Wisconsin have put a damper on load testing recently. Reloder 7 is the only powder I have tried so far in either round with cast bullets. It's the slowest powder used in the .357 Max, and one of the faster ones for the ought-six. It does yield a good reduced-power load in the .30-'06, but a really mild load can be made with a pistol powder like Unique. Another really good powder for the ought-six is SR4759, now distributed by Hodgdon. If you can find it, it makes a wonderful mid-power load with 150 to 200 grain bullets in the .30-'06.

Consult the Lyman cast bullet manual, or as mentioned by Stimpy, the Lee book.

RK,

They work just fine - name your caliber.  Friend of mine's gone to all CB's in all his rifles, (.22 - .50 calibers) even Handi's.  He had to learn to be a lot pickier with his shots on big game, and he paper patches.  Let us know how you do.

I have been a fan of CB's in .30 cal's for some time:  .30-30, .308, .30-06, 7.62x39.  They have all done well.  Right now I have a couple of .30-30's, a Savage 24 and a Savage 340, that shoot CB's very well.  I also have a CZ 527 in 7.62x39 that likes CB's.

With the .30 calibers, you can use round balls for very light loads, or heavier CB's for large game animals such as deer.

My next project is to set up my Handi with a .30-30 barrel and fit up a pistol scope in a "Scout" configuration.  I intend to use it only with cast bullets.  All I need to do is to get the barrel.
