Haven't used it, but I would definitely be trying Federal Fusions...

Winchester 240 grain semi-jacketed soft points shoot very well in my Handi .44 at 100 yards.  They should offer good penetration and make a decent wound cavity.   ;)

Wlater,

I used the Remmie 240 and 210 grain 44s' in my Ruger deerfield carbine with great (really great )accuracy... Took two coyotes and one whitetail , The deer had a baseball sized hole on the farside of its chest...Animal was (guessing) about 50 yards running broadside
And it goes without saying it was pretty bad on the yotes  ::)
So i can vouche for the Rems, But i have faith that there are no shortage of good rounds from a wide range of manufacturers

I am told to use the JSP rather then the JHP.  The rifle will have 300 - 400 fps more velocity then the revolvers that use the JHP.

out of mine but it might be to much for a little one

Hornady is coming out with a 225 gr. leverevolution for the .44 mag. My son is getting a .44 handi for christmas and I want to try them in it. I don't know when they will be available for purchase though.

Remington UMC 180 grain Jacketed Soft Points.  Product code L44MG7.  They come in a box of 50 so plenty to sight in with and hunt.
Light kicking 1610 feet per second out of a handgun.  Plenty fast enough to take down a deer out of a rifle and flater shooting than the 240's.
Option 2 are the Winchester 210 grain Silver tips.  They are down loaded to a hot special.

I can't wait for these.  They are claiming about 200fps faster than the big3's production 240gr softpoints out of a revolver.  I am really interested to see what they will do from a handi rifle with a proper sized bore.

So what were the results?  What ammo did you go with and how did the kid do?  Did he get a deer?

What kind of accuracy are users getting out of the 44 mag handi rifle? I'm thinking about buying one for use during deer season but know some folks that say it is not an accurate gun. Most of my shots will be 40 yards or less but I could (rarely) have a shot out to 100 yards. What kind of grouping can I expect at 20 to 60 yards with this gun shooting factory ammo?

Thanks!

Bought one today. I also picked up Winchester 240 grain hollow soft point ammo. I'll sight it in later this week. Since 90% of my shots (deer hunting) will be at a distance of 20 to 60 yards, how would you sight it in? In other words, should I "zero" it in at 40 yards and check it at 20, 60 and 100? Any suggestions?

I have a little Ruger Deer field and zeroed it at 50 yards and checked it at 100.  I don't see shots in the brush past that on the farm these days unless I'm in a field and then the 308 is used.  I use the .44 to still hunt or on drives as it's short and easy to move around the thorn bushes.

Took my new 44 mag to the shooting range today to sight in the scope. Took 2 shots, adjusted scope and repeated. The first 5 pairs of shots grouped well relative to each other. However, from that point on, the shots tended to scatter. Maybe the barrel got too hot?

Also, this was shooting the gun right out of the box (no cleaning). Didn't know that cleaning was recommended before shooting. I'll clean the bore before I go back to the range.

Maybe a little more time in the FAQs would be a good idea, but look on the bright side, ya get to make another range trip!! ;D Cleaning a new rifle was just discussed, the link below is on page 3.  ;)
