7mmSTW & Barnes 140gr XLC bullets
« on: January 01, 2008, 07:32:48 AM »
Happy New Year! Has anyone had any luck loading the Barnes XLC bullets. I'm trying to work up a load for my 7mmSTW in Ruger #1 without much luck. The Barnes 140gr will shoot 3 shot groups just over an inch and a half at 100m. Using the Nosler ballistic tip and IMR7828 it shoots inside three quarters of an inch with it not being uncommon to shoot under a half inch. I picked up a pound of 8700 and will try to work up a load with that.

These work very well for me in a 7mm Remington Magnum.  First, don't seat them right against the lands but off a bit.  Second, they need to be pushed fairly fast and, since they develop lower pressure than jacketed bullets due to the coating, will probably need 1.5 to 3 grains more powder than you're using with jacketed bullets of the same weight.
