looking for 209 conversion kits
« on: December 21, 2007, 02:51:33 AM »
I can't find the place, but I once bought some 209 primers kits for my fathers and cousins 58 caliber smokepoles.  They just replace the nipple and they fit perfectly in the breech plug.  It was a online store or something.  I wish I would have kept their web address.  Anyone know where I can get them?

I know the Hubbard's primer holder was a direct screw-in replacement for the #11 nipple on my .58 Huntsman from the '70's.

Also, this musket nipple functions flawlessly in the same breechplug:

Redhawk,
I know that Hubbards has the 209 conversion kit, I was just talking to him yesterday about a replacement rod and he told me he makes the conversion kit.
Merry Christmas,

Here's what the Hubbard's primer holders for my .58 Huntsman and muzzleloader conversion Shikari look like:

Installed in the .58's push-in breechplug:

Instead of the allen wrench socket at the start of the flash channel for removal they now feature an external hex nut shape, I believe.

This is the business end of the breechplug with the conical powder well mod' I did... no more blowby into the standing breech:

Hammerspur are you saying the nipple (209) (mostly) eliminates  the the blow by, I haven't shot my .58 a whole bunch but I know when I went to the 25acp conversion on my encore it was remarkable so I am curious as to the 11-209 elimination on my push in. Kurt

Injun,

I didn't mean it to sound like the change to 209 priming had any effect on blow-by... I was referring to the hollowed out cavity in the breech plug itself visible in the third photo.

With the initial light-off taking place within the end of the plug rather than ahead of it and without that large flat "piston" for the expanding gasses to push against, much less (virtually nil) fouling gets past the breech plug into the standing breech area.

The pressure upon ignition of the expanding gasses pressing outward against the interior walls of the hollow end of the breech plug perhaps helps to form a more effective gas seal as well... much like the brass case of a center fire cartridge does. ( ??? )

Copy That. Now How did ya or what did you use to get the radius you got . I had not even thought about that blow by happening . Kurt

Kurt,

I started by drilling out the long flash channel to increasingly shallower depth stops which yielded something like a mold for a miniature Devo hat!

Then the "steps" got smoothed out with a variety of rotary files and burrs, Cratex bits followed by buff 'n polish.

I can do that . Think I take a peek in the machine room at work to see what we may have for radius mill cutters first though may save a little work before the polishing thanks for the info. Kurt

Kurt, that sounds alot easier than my method, but having no access to a machine shop I had to do it by the elbow grease, amateur system.

One of these days I plan to get a decent combo lathe-mill setup.
Course, then I'd have to learn how to run the thing too!  ::)
