It was a Minnesota Bear, He was light for his size and we found out why - when I skun him out we found a broadhead scar on the top of his back that I went down and stuck into his front shoulder and healed up ( we found the broadhead when a relative cooked the shoulder roast and found it in the bone) so we think he had a tough previous winter and was slow to recover his body weight before fall.

Big Blackies are a different breed. You hear so many stories of broadhead and bullet wounds that heal. I think their state of "hibernation" accounts for some of the big bears that survive. Little is known of how they slow their systems through the Winter. An interesting side note, Black Bear shed the skin on their paws during hibernation. They emerge with fresh soft pads each Spring.
