Bullet type and speed vs. C.O.L.
« on: January 11, 2008, 11:47:24 AM »
I've been loading .223 for years and through trial and error of many, many combinations finally found a load that worked. Now, I am starting over with a 22-250 and have it in my head what type of powder, and bullet I would like to use. I was thinking of finding the best length then work up in charge. Or is finding the correct bullet for the barrel going to have the most impact? I'm shooting a 22" 1:14 barrel. And I want to shoot nosler 55gr. ballistic tip.

Others may have a diffrent idea but when working up new loads i start with a factory COL and ajust my powder charge to find the best groups only then do i start moving the bullet in and out looking for the Sweet spot .

My 218 Bee likes the bullet seated just a tad deeper ( .020 ) than factory while my 223 and 243 like them WAY out there .

Thanks for the reply Stimpy, is that just the way you always done it, or have you tried it the other way with bad results?

I've been working up loads as described by Stimpy, First find the best load for a bullet at the specified COL, then adjust the seating for best accuracy. You just can't work every variable at the same time.
In my limited experience, I find much more variance from the powder charge that with seating depth, so it makes sense to deal with the biggest variable first.

What i have found over the years is that the powder and charge weight will have more to do with how well a rifle shoots as apposed to the seating depth .

What i do is find a bullet / powder combo that shoots well then i will try to shrink the groups by bullet depth , sometimes this helps and sometimes it does not .

Also you have better control over what your pressures are going to do by working up the powder charge first .
