New Handy 204
« on: January 07, 2008, 06:41:53 AM »
Brought myself a late Christmas present, a new 204 Ruger, just my second frame but as luck would have it it fits all 6 of the barrels for my other handy. Score. Now I just need the weather here in the Greater Seattle area to break(should happen around the 12th of July) so I can shoot it!

The days are starting to get longer now so spring is just around the corner______ha! Well at least where I live we are having a big thaw. So I am hoping to get to the range on Friday. Got to test out the fore-end bedding's effect on accuracy of my Green Hornet. Also I have lapped the lug shelf a bit on my 204 so I'll check it out too. I think I'll try FredM's idea and try light loads of Varget in the 204 as BLC(2) just doesn't work in mine--- bad pressure signs at mid level loads. The IMR-4895 worked pretty well with 1-1/4 MOA consistantly.

Mc.
By now you should have this 204 shooting - 0.5".  Maybe, and that is maybe a compressed lood of Varget may produce something better than 1-1/4".

Have you ever sluged this barrel maybe you got a lemon or you got a lot of rattles a non connected entity E-W and N-S. You know the drill???

Went out with my 6x47 Handi and missed two coyotes, it bugs me because I don't know why I missed and  I had no chance to check out the rifle since. Both
coyotes should bit the dust because they were not out very far. I hope it is not the rifle.

Did not have a whole lot of luck with varget mind you all I tried was the Nosler 40 grain head with that. But that head is just not as good as others from what I have read. BLC-(2)  gave me the same pressure spikes, I am  a grain off max and piercing primers.

I did not explore varget since H4895 was working so go for me.

Fred I still have a ways to go to get the latch and shelf mate-up evenly as it should be. I think the barrel is O.K.as it cleans up well and it seems to be smooth, just a bit tight. The groups are well shaped too. Part of the 1-1/4 MOA is me as I find it hard to shoot off the hinge. I have a good coyote load for this winter so I am happy. I'll do more work on it come spring.
