Shot the 500 S&W this weekend at a shooting fair.   :shock: well, not really shocked at the recoil.  The muzzle break really makes it very pleasant to shoot.  Any one else out there tried it?  IronMonkey

Yeah, I shot a cylinderful. Did you attend the fair out at Raahauge's this weekend? I went with friends on Sunday and blew my mad money for the week ($100) shooting stuff I was interested in maybe buying. The recoil on the big x-frame was really managable. I'd want something a little more compact for hauling around the desert or woods and mountains, though. The rep said it's being tested for the Kalifornia DOJ list and should be available in the state soon. I'd rather see a reintroduction of the 657 Mountain Gun myself. :grin:  RKBA!

How do you regard the overall portability of the gun compared, for example, with a Contender or a 629?

Yep, I was at the fair.  Loved the 17 HMR too.  Not exactly too big though.  I think that it is only a little more cumbersome than a contender.   But I have not tried one without ports yet.  IronMonkey

I played with one today. No way I'd want to carry that monster through the woods. I'm stickin' with .44s! :money:

Which load did you shoot? I'm aware of three. There is a 275 grain Barnes that is really little more than a .44 mag. can do and certainly well less than a .454 Casull. Then there are the 400 and 440s. Now those should kick if anything is going to in the gun. They are pretty potent indeed.

The owner only had one box of (expensive!) ammo and I got there late as the last few rounds were being fired. All I really got to do was hold it and aim it. I know a great many people will LOVE it, but for me, it's just too big, too heavy, and too awkward. I'd rather have a little ol' FA .475, Actually, I think I'll be happy with my .44 Bisleys. I'm afraid that if I shot a deer with that thing all you'd have left is a mount and the hindquarters!  :grin:

The load that I shot was a cast bullet.  Don't know about the weight.  Forgot to ask or look.  I do know for certain that it was not a barnes bullet.  Fun though.  Dan
